Dr. Gomez-Rivas was a Research Engineer at The University of Texas, Austin, when the Civil Engineering Department was developing testing laboratories at the Balcones Research Center (now J.J. Pickle Research Center). His responsibility was to design and build testing equipment for research in structures. His main resource was an immense field storing scrap equipment from WWII. There were tanks, machine guns, cranes, airplanes and all sorts of military equipment. At the beginning of a project, he went to the dump and selected pieces of equipment that properly modified could be used to build testing facilities. At UT he obtained his first Ph.D. in Civil Engineering. Some years later he was testing Engineer for Kaiser Aluminum in San Francisco, CA, where his tasks was to test transmission towers to failure. Later on, he was awarded his second Ph.D. in Economics at Rice University and many years later he joined the Structural Analysis and Design program. At UHD he has developed laboratories with grants from NSF for structures and fire protection. He teaches courses in structural engineering and fire protection engineering.
