W.I. Dykes Library

Information for Visitors

Welcome to the W.I. Dykes Library at the University of Houston-Downtown. Visitors from other universities and the general public are invited to use many of the library's collections and services. We are located on the 4th and 5th floors of the One Main Building at 1 Main Street in downtown Houston. The main library entrance on 4th Floor North is easy to reach by elevator from the building entrance near the METRORail station on Main Street, or from the building entrances near the Girard Street parking areas.

If you are planning to visit the library for the first time, please see Directions and Parking for more details about how to find us. The library staff is also available to answer your questions about the library by phone at 713-221-8186 or by email at Ask a Librarian.

Borrowing and Circulation

Most visitors can obtain borrowing privileges by presenting a valid reciprocal borrowing card from another Texas library. Students, faculty, staff, and alumni from the University of Houston, the University of Houston-Clear Lake, or the University of Houston-Victoria can borrow most library materials by presenting a current university identification card or a valid university alumni card. Limited borrowing is available to visitors who show a current TexShare Card from a university, college, or public library.

Limited borrowing is also available to visitors who purchase an Affiliate Borrowers Card. The cost is $50.00 per year. To purchase the card, a visitor must be a local resident 18 years or older with valid photo identification. Due to accounting guidelines, the card is only available to purchase when the Cashiers Office is open. Please call 713-221-8196 for the Cashiers Office operating hours.

TexShare and Affiliate card holders may borrow up to 4 books at a time. Journals, compact discs, and videos may not be borrowed, but these materials can be used inside the library. Visitors must present photo identification to use some materials and equipment. To comply with copyright law, we restrict access for course reserves to current UHD students and faculty.

The library's website provides free access to the UHD Library Catalog and List of Journals. Due to license restrictions, remote access to other databases and electronic publications is available only to currently enrolled UHD students, faculty, and staff. Contact your local public library for information about databases that are available for remote access with a valid library card.

For more borrowing information, please see Borrowing & Circulation and Loan Periods and Renewals.

Computers and Wireless

The Library Computer Lab in Room 401-North offers Internet access, research databases, and office software. A limited number of workstations are available to visitors with valid government-issued photo identification, such as a driver's license or a passport. High school students may present a school picture identification card and a letter from their teacher. For their safety, we ask that children and young teens be supervised at all times by a parent or another responsible adult. Our staff will notify the police of any unattended child. Use of computers is limited to 2 non-consecutive 30-minute sessions per day.

Printing is not available to most visitors, but documents from most library databases and office applications can be sent by e-mail or saved to a USB storage device. As a courtesy to our sister campuses, we offer printing to visitors from the University of Houston, the University of Houston-Clear Lake, the University of Houston-Victoria, or Lone Star College. To sign up for a printing computer, present a valid university identification card from one of these institutions.
