The library purchases materials to support all subjects taught at the University of Houston-Downtown. To support commuting students who do research at home or work, the library is building a substantial collection of electronic books and journals made available through the Databases & Articles section of this website and the UHD Library Catalog. We are also continuing to update and expand in-house collections of fiction and non-fiction books, audiobooks, children's books, compact discs, and videos. The university is currently planning the renovation of the library's collection spaces to improve access to these in-house materials.
Most of the library's in-house collections are located in 5th Floor South and 5th Floor North. The General Collection in 5th Floor South is the library's main collection of books. Collection strengths include business, criminal justice, and education. Large books are shelved in the Oversize Collection at the back of the South Tower (Rows 182-183). Both collections are arranged by subject using Library of Congress Call Numbers. The South Tower also houses the Leisure Reading Collection, a small but growing selection of popular fiction and nonfiction paperbacks. Stop by and pick up a "fun read" to take a break or to read at home.
The North Tower houses the Periodicals Collection, a selection of scholarly journals, trade journals, and popular magazines arranged in alphabetical order. Most current journals and magazines are now exclusively available online in Databases & Articles and the alphabetical List of Journals. The in-house periodicals are supplemented by the Microforms Collection, which has microrfilm reproductions of older journals, magazines, and newspapers. Current newspapers such as Barrons, the Houston Chronicle, the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, and La Voz de Houston are also located near the Microforms Collection. For a much larger sellection of current and historical newspapers, see the News Databases page in Databases & Articles.
Audiobooks, compact discs, and videos are available in the Audiovisual Services Collection in 5th Floor North. In addition to these materials, the collection has viewing and listening stations for these media. Headphones are available at the Circulation Desk. To seach audio and video collections, see Audio and Video Databases or Music Databases - Audio and Video.
The Juvenile Literature Collection at the back of the North Tower supports teaching in English and Urban Education by providing fiction and nonfiction books for children in preschool through grade twelve. The collection is focused on award-winning and multicultural books, and includes both English- and Spanish-language publications (see Children's Book and Juvenile Databases).
The Texas Education Collection is a selection of textbooks chosen by the Texas Education Agency and adopted by Houston Independent School District in kindergarten through grade twelve. These materials include teaching kits, teacher's guides, and curriculum guides, plus "big book" editions of English- and Spanish-language picture books. Textbooks and guides are arranged by subject, grade level, and publisher. The collection is currently located in the northwest corner of the 5th Floor of the library.
To search the Collection online, follow these steps on the library catalog's Advanced Search screen:
1. In the box labeled "Add Limits (Optional)":
1a. Next to Location, select "--Limit to UHD".
1b. Next to Sub-collection, select "TEXTBOOKS K-12".
NOTE: By combining steps 1a and 1b, results of your search will be limited to items in the Collection.
2. Now enter any search terms you like in the search boxes.

3. Click the Submit button.
The library keeps copies of every thesis submitted to graduate programs at the University of Houston-Downtown. These materials are shelved near the information desk on 4th Floor North and can be checked out like other books. The Theses Collection is arranged by department and year. All materials can be found in the library catalog (see the List of UHD Theses).
