University of Houston-Downtown students, faculty, and staff can borrow library materials with their campus identification card. UHD alumni must present an alumni card. (Visit Student Accounting and Cashiers in the One Main Building, Room S-204, to get your alumni card for a small one-time fee.) Visitors from the University of Houston and the University of Houston-Clear Lake may borrow with equivalent identification from their own campus.
Visitors affiliated with another Texas university, college, or public library can borrow library materials by presenting a TexShare Card obtained from their home library. The card is usually provided free of charge by the home library.
Local residents 18 years or older may purchase an Affiliate Borrower Card from our library for $50.00 per year. Photo identification is required. Cards are available to purchase only when the Cashier is open. Call 713-221-8196 for operating hours.

For details about loan periods for books and other library materials, see Loan Periods and Renewals.
Return books to libraries at UH-Downtown, UH-Clear Lake, or the University of Houston. After-hours returns can be placed in a drop box in the library's 5th floor lobby. Return audio and video materials to staff at the library where they were checked out.
Receipts for returned items are available during library hours -- just ask a staff member.
Circulation staff will notify borrowers of the due date when materials are checked out.
If you forget the due date for materials you borrowed, see My Account or call 713-221-8186.
For details about loan periods for books and other library materials, see Loan Periods and Renewals.
The loan period for some materials can be renewed for additional time. Renewal may be blocked if another person has requested the item. To renew an item, visit the Circulation Desk, call 713-221-8186, or renew online using My Account.
For details about the rules governing renewals, see Loan Periods and Renewals.
All materials are subject to recall after two weeks if they are needed by another person.
If an item is recalled, you will receive notice of the new due date. Please check My Account to verify your addresses.
To recall an item that is checked out for an extended period, call 713-221-8186 or use Ask a Librarian.
Place a hold to reserve a book that is checked out or to request delivery from another University of Houston System campus:
You will be notified by e-mail when the book is ready to pick up. Books are usually delivered from other campuses in 3-5 days (excluding weekends). If the book is checked out to another person, it will be delivered after the previous borrower returns it. If someone has requested the same book before you, the book will be delivered after that person has checked out the book and returned it. To confirm your request or to check on the status of your request, see My Account or call 713-221-8186.
Please return or renew materials before the due date to avoid late or lost item charges.
For details about charges for late or lost items, see Library Fines and Charges.
Unpaid charges of $10.00 or more may result in loss of borrowing privileges and also prevent students from registering for classes or requesting transcripts. If you get an overdue notice for an item you believe was returned, ask for a claims returned form or email the circulation staff. We will temporarily suspend charges while we search for the missing item.
Overdue and recall notices will be sent to the e-mail or postal address in your library record. Check My Account to verify that the library has your current e-mail address and mailing address. Failure to receive a notice is not grounds for dismissal of charges.
Borrowers are responsible for returning library materials in good condition.
Replacement costs may be charged for damaged materials such as books, CDs and DVD packaging (see Library Fines).
