Institutional Scholarships

The University of Houston-Downtown strives to recognize and reward outstanding academic achievement of prospective and continuing students.


Scholarship awards will be awarded as long as funds are available. UHD scholarships are credited toward your tuition and fee bill. If you are awarded funds in excess of your tuition and fee bill, the UHD Student Accounting Office will issue a credit balance on your UHD Higher One GatorCard.


FRESHMAN:

Completion of your Admissions application and formal acceptance as a University of Houston-Downtown student is required to be considered for a UHD Freshman Scholarship. A separate scholarship application is not available or required, however you must meet the following requirements to be considered for this scholarship opportunity:

NEW FRESHMAN STUDENT SCHOLARSHIPS 2012/2013
Award
$1500 per academic year - $750 per semester
Eligibility
Lucia La Madrid Cain Endowed Scholarship Fund
Minimum 2.7 high school GPA based on a 4 point scale
Must be a New Freshman entering for the Fall 2012 term
Graduated from high school within last two years
Must enroll in 12 or more hours each semester

May be renewable, if renewal criteria are met each semester.
Application No Application – Deadline for completed Admission acceptance is January 31st.
Award $1500 per academic year - $750 per semester
Eligibility
International (Southland) Paper Mills Foundation Endowed Scholarship
Minimum 2.7 high school GPA based on a 4 point scale
Must be a U.S. citizen or Permanent Resident
Must be a New Freshman entering for the Fall 2012 term
Graduated from high school within last two years
Must enroll in 12 or more hours each semester
Transcript submission required for Admission acceptance
May be renewable, if renewal criteria are met each semester.

Hugh Roy Cullen Leadership Scholarship

TRANSFER STUDENTS:

Completion of your Admissions application and formal acceptance as a University of Houston-Downtown student is required to be considered for a UHD Transfer Scholarship. The new Transfer Scholarship requires that you submit an application; you must also meet the following requirements to be considered for this scholarship opportunity:

 

NEW TRANSFER STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP 2012/2013
Award
$1500 per academic year - $750 per semester
Eligibility
Dr. W.I. Dykes Scholarship

Must have a cumulative GPA 3.0 from college/university - Submit official transcripts

Must be entering for Fall 2012 as a new transfer student and accepted through Office of Admissions

Must not have previously earned any credits at UHD.

Minimum of 45 transfer college/university credits.

Must enroll in 12 or more hours (fall and spring semesters)

Resident of Harris County

Must demonstrate citizenship

Involved in student activities

Non-renewable; maybe eligible to compete for continuing student scholarships

  (Students enrolling for Spring 2012, whom have never earned any UHD credit hours, are also eligible to apply.)

Eligibility

William Randolph Hearst Scholarship

Must be entering Fall 2012 as a new transfer student and accepted through the Office of Admissions

Minimum of 45 transfer college/university credits-must be classified as a junior or senior

Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 from college/university - Submit official transcripts

Must not have previously earned any credits at UHD.

Must enroll in 12 or more hours (fall and spring semesters)

Financial need may be considered

Non-renewable; maybe eligible to compete for continuing student scholarships

  (Students enrolling for Spring 2012, whom have never earned any UHD credit hours, are also eligible to apply.)

Autrey Scholarship

Must be entering Fall 2012 as a new transfer student and accepted through Office of Admissions

Student must be of good moral character

Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 - Submit official transcripts

Must not have previously earned any credits at UHD.

Minimum of 45 transfer college/university credits.

Must enroll in 12 or more hours (fall and spring semesters)

Eligibility

Deans Scholarship

Must be entering Fall 2012 as a transfer student and accepted through the Office of Admissions

Minimum of 45 transfer college/university credits

Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5 - Submit official transcripts

Must not have previously earned any credits at UHD

Must enroll in 12 or more hours (fall and spring semester)

May be renewable up to 4 semesters - Fall and Spring awards, if renewable criteria are met each semester.

Renewal of awards is contingent upon successful completion of 12 credit hours and maintaining a 3.0 GPA at the end of each semester.

Students enrolled Spring 2013 are also eligible to apply, if they have not earned any UHD credit before the application deadline.

CONTINUING STUDENTS:

UHD Scholarship applications for continuing full-time and part-time students are not required.

 

 

UHD FULL-TIME STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP 2012/2013
Award
$1500 per academic year - $750 per semester

Jesse H. and Mary Gibbs Jones Endowment Scholarship
Currently enrolled at UHD or last school is UHD
Have earned at least 45 UHD credit hours and no more than 85 cumulative credit hours
Merit based
Minimum 3.2 UHD GPA
Must enroll in 12 or more hours each semester

UHD PART-TIME STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP 2012/2013
Award
$600 per academic year - $300 per semester
Eligibility
Boney Scholarship
Merit Based
Minimum 3.2 UHD GPA
Have earned 45 credit hours at UHD and no more than 85 cumulative credit hours
Minimum enrollment of 6 hours - maximum 11 hours at UHD each semester
Non-renewable
No application required, candidates selected by the committee

OTHER INSTITUTIONAL SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:

 

RED ROSE LEADERSHIP SCHOLARSHIP 2012/2013
Award
$3000 per academic year – ($1500 for Fall 2012 & $1500 for Spring 2013)
Eligibility

Must have completed at least 57 credit hours of college-level course work by the end of the Fall 2011 semester (excluding developmental coursework), of which 24 hours must be earned at UHD. All transcripts from colleges previously attended, which are currently on the UHD student record system, will be reviewed to verify accepted college credit hours earned.

Must agree to enroll in a minimum 12 semester hours during the Fall 2012 and Spring 2013 semesters (Developmental courses will not count towards the 12 hour minimum requirement each semester.)

Must currently have a UHD GPA of 3.5 or better to apply. However, if your GPA is lower than 3.5 after the completion of the Fall term, after deadline to apply, your application will be withdrawn.

Demonstrated service and  leadership to the UHD community and to family and work life.

Enrolled in a Baccalaureate Degree Program, currently pursuing first undergraduate degree.

Planned graduation of May 2012 or later, ineligible if graduating prior to Spring 2013-Graduation dates will be verified through your advisor.

 

The UHD 24 credit hour requirement will include your Fall coursework currently in progress.  However, if you do not successfully complete 57 hours of coursework and/or your GPA falls below 3.5 after Fall  grades have posted, your application will not be considered.

FIFTH YEAR ACCOUNTING SCHOLARSHIP 2011/2012
Award

Minimum Award $1,500 (Fall $750/Spring $750)
Maximum Award $5,000 (Fall $2,500/Spring $2,500)
Based on Financial Aid need, which is determined by submitting a FAFSA.

Eligibility
  • Resident of Texas; 
  • Complete and file a FAFSA application, which is available at http:www.fafsa.ed.gov/ and demonstrate financial need;
  • Must have filed an Application of Intent with the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy ($50 fee);
  • Complete an Application for the Fifth-year Accounting Student Scholarship, available below;
  • Enrolled in at least a half-time basis (6 credit hours or more);
  • Satisfactory Academic Progress in the student’s program of study and meets the scholastic ability and performance standards as measured in the cumulative grade point average; not less than a 2.0 GPA
  • A cumulative grade point average that is equal to or greater than the grade point average required for graduation (equal to or greater than a 2.0);
  • Have registered for the Selective Service or are exempt from this requirement;
  • Completed at least 120 credit hours of college work, including at least 15 hours of upper level accounting;
  • Must need fewer than 30 semester hours to complete the 150 semester hour education requirement to take the CPA examination:
    • 150 semester hours of college credit
    • 30 semester hours of upper level accounting courses
    • 24 semester hours of upper level business courses
    • 3 semester hours of a Board-approved ethics course
  • Student has not received this award in a prior year; and
  • Not taken the CPA examination in Texas or another jurisdiction.

 

 

Step 1

Must demonstrate financial need by completing the 2011-2012 FASFA and submitting a valid SAR to UHD by deadline, must have financial aid need of at least $1,500 to qualify. (Not eligible if your need is below the minimum requirement.)

Step 2

Submit an Application of Intent to take the CPA examination to the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy (applications cannot be considered until a copy of the Acknowledgement from TSBPA is submitted to the Scholarship and Financial Aid Office for review. Step 3

Submit an Application for the Fifth-year Accounting Student Scholarship Program to the College of Business Administrator to complete Section 2.

Step 4

Submit a copy of your Acknowledgement Notice from the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy, including your Application after Sections 1 and 2 have been completed by you and the COB to the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.

Application

 

Good Neighbor Scholarship Program 2013-2014
Award
One year of tuition (fall, spring and summer).  Student is responsible for payment of institutional fees and other charges.
Eligibility
Be a nonresident from an eligible country;
Be a native-born citizen and current resident of a nation of the Western Hemisphere other than Cuba or the United States;
Intend to return to the eligible country upon completion of his/her program of study, not eligible if you have permanent resident status;
Be admitted unconditionally at an eligible public institution in Texas; and
Maintain satisfactory academic progress

Please note that UHD students who are currently receiving a renewable UHD Freshman undergraduate scholarship or a renewable Dean's scholarship are not eligible to also receive the UHD Jones undergraduate scholarship. All scholarship awards requirements will be reviewed at the end of each semester, your award will be cancelled if your UHD GPA drops below the minimum requirement stated on your Scholarship Award Letter and/or Agreement Form.


Scholarships awarded by organizations outside UHD will be disbursed according to guidelines provided by the donor organization.
