Occasionally, the University invites selected and esteemed professionals
to campus to speak at short term special events without performing
any type of service to the University other than to speak.
These situations are best termed as honoraria events,
where the professional accepts an agreed gift or reward payment
for his or her attendance and presentation.
This does not apply to a lecturer for a class or course, who has
a more long term relationship with the University and is required
to perform additional services as a condition to receiving compensation.
Generally speaking, an honorarium is defined as:
a voluntary reward for that for which no remuneration
could be collected by law
that is freely given without any
legal liability existing to necessitate such payment.
True honoraria events do not need to be documented by contract,
but will need to be authorized by having the speaker and a UHD representative
complete an Honorarium Authorization Form (including the Nonresident
Alien Information form if applicable) prior to the event. (OGC-SF-2002-1
