Disability Awareness Week

Welcome to the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD). The Office of Disability Services (ODS) presents Disability Awareness Week October 14th -16th 2013. During awareness week we encourage you to learn more about the services ODS offers by participating in one or all of the upcoming activities.


Monday, October 14th

Freshman Convocation Series:
Exploring Autism Spectrum Disorder
A300 Special Events Houston Area
Time: 10am-11am


Community Resources Fair / Assistive Technology
Location: Academic Building Room A300

Event Description: A fair featuring community organizations/agencies that provide services for individuals with disabilities. In addition to community resources, this fair will highlight technology equipment used for students with various disabilities. We will be raffling off  a Kindle Fire and 2 Gift Cards to those who attend.


Tuesday, October 15th
Speaker : Ana Calvo
Location: Academic Building Room A300
Time: 10:00am-11:00am

Event Description: Former UHD student, Ana Calvo will discuss her personal experiences related to living, pursuing education and a career as a person with a disability. Her message will encourage people with and without disabilities to achieve their dreams.

Orientation / Meet & Treats

Location: Office of Disability S409

Event Description: Come Visit and socialize with Disability Services. The Ice Cream social is a wonderful opportunity to have questions answered regarding registration with the ODS. Guest will also have the opportunity to tour the facilities.


Wednesday, October 16th
Movie Screening
Location: Main Building Room N420

Event Description: The Hammer (2011)
- is a sports drama depicting the struggles and successes Matt Hamill faces on the way to becoming a champion. Raised among those with the ability to hear, Matt later finds himself no less an outsider amidst the Deaf Community. Through sheer determination, he uses his perceived disability as an asset, and becomes both the first deaf wrestler to win a National Collegiate Championship and an inspirational force to the hearing and deaf alike. Refreshments will be served.
