Information Technology started the implementation
of a university-wide "Desktop Computing and Software Library Project"
in 1996. Most UHD full-time faculty and staff members are provided with
up-to-date PCs and general productivity software on a 3 year rotating
basis (by department). The PCs that fall below the minimum standard are
updated when the department's upgrade rotation is scheduled. Departments
that are eligible for new PC replacement by the Desktop Computing Project
are those that are HEAF eligible. In some cases the departments
that are not eligible for new PCs purchase them from their own budgets.
Access to PCs is also provided for adjunct faculty and part-time staff
as defined by their unit leadership. Networked departmental laser printers
are installed in departments, but individual user printers are covered
from the unit's budget. A set of application standards has been adopted
and is provided to all faculty and staff (see list below). Microsoft Office
Professional and McAfee VirusScan are also provided to faculty and staff
for use at home free of charge.
