Office 2007 documents will be unrecognized on computers that do not have Office 2007. Instead of using the .doc or new .docx extension, the system will rename the file with a .zip extension.

The following are instructions on how to rename the extension in order to open it.

Show File Extensions
Many systems are set up to hide file extensions. First, you will need to make sure your computer shows all file extensions.

1. Open My Computer.
2. Go to Tools > Folder Options.
3. Click the View tab.
4. Below, in Advanced Settings, un-check “Hide extensions for known file types.” (If already unchecked, leave it.)
5. Click OK.

Change File Extension
Next, you will need to change the file extension of the document you have downloaded.

1. Navigate to the location where you saved the document.

If the file has a file extension of .zip, the file has been renamed.

2. Right-click the file.
3. Select Rename from the menu.
4. The file name will now be editable. Edit the EXTENSION of the file name to match whatever type of file it is supposed to be.

If file is… Rename extension to...

Word 2007

.docx

PowerPoint 2007

.pptx

Exel 2007

.xslx

5. Hit the Enter key.

The file now has the correct extension and may be opened properly using Office 2007 (or using an older version of Office if the Office Compatibility Pack has been installed).
