2008 Red Rose Scholars
Through the years Red Rose Scholars have represented a diverse mix of students who work hard for high academic achievement. Many are already working full time and have family responsibilities. Often, they are the first in their families to attend a university. This year's scholars will receive $3,000 for the 2008-09 academic year.

Araly Barrera, a junior majoring in computer science, is the first person in her immediate family to attend college. She is minoring in applied mathematics and works on campus as a computer science researcher for the Scholars Academy. She also tutors part time for the Collaborative Learning Community Center Laboratory. Araly belongs to the Scholars Academy and the Junior Achievement Program and the Scholars Academy Honor Corps. In addition to receiving the Jesse H. Jones Scholarship, she won the W.I. Dykes Scholarship for Junior Achievement for freshmen, and a scholarship from the national Hispanic Scholarship Fund. She also won the national XEROX Scholarship. After graduation, Araly plans to attend graduate school to study software engineering. Eventually, she hopes to work for Continental Airlines or Exxon Mobil.
"I hope to give back all the support that my family has given me and become an inspiration to women computer scientists everywhere," she said.

R. Dustin Bryant is a senior, majoring in chemistry, with an emphasis in biochemistry. Accepted to the pre-medical program at UHD, he is pleased with the smaller class sizes UHD offers. Dustin works full time on campus at the fungus laboratory, under the direction of professor Phil Lyons. He is an Eagle Scout and a troop leader, the co-founder of the campus Chess Lyceum, a member of the Leeuwenhoek Society and a volunteer with the Star of Hope program at his church. Dustin has won a Scholars Academy scholarship and The National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant. After graduation, he would like to pursue a degree in molecular medicine. Dustin would also like to continue his undergraduate research that focuses on photosynthesis and the search for alternative fuels.
"I can to the best of my ability try to preserve life, and therefore bring hope to the hopeless."

Jennifer Cantrell is a junior, earning her degree in psychology with a minor in international relations. She received her EMT-I certification in 2000 from San Jacinto College and enrolled at UHD after being encouraged by a friend. Jennifer is the first person in her immediate family to go to college and owns her own business, Houston Civil Process. She says her business has enabled her to make many contacts in the Houston legal community. She is creating the Roland K. Duncan Girls Fund, a fledgling non-profit organization that benefits homeless and at-risk teenage girls in Houston. The organization will provide temporary shelter, counseling, educational services and outreach programs. Jennifer plans to earn a master's and Ph.D. in psychology.
"I hope to infuse in the minds of young women that success is highly attainable, rewarding, and contagious; regardless of past adverse circumstances," she said.

Dennis Garcia is a senior, pursuing a degree in biology with a minor in criminal justice. Dennis works full time on campus as a research assistant in the Pierce's Disease Research Laboratory under the direction of professor Lisa Morano. He was drawn to University of Houston-Downtown by its central location and the ethnic diversity of the student body and faculty. In addition to achieving Deans' List standing at UHD, Dennis belongs to Phi Kappa Phi, a national honor society, UHD's Scholars Academy and the Honor Corps of the Scholars Academy. He has won the Jesse H. Jones Scholarship and recently co-authored an article in a peer-reviewed scientific journal, Current Microbiology . After Dennis earns his bachelor's degree, he plans to enroll in graduate school, seeking a degree in biomedical science with an emphasis on human molecular biology.
"My perseverance in overcoming difficult challenges is characteristic of the fierce loyalty I use to fuel my ambitions for success," he said.

Micaela Gilbert is a junior, majoring in chemistry. She also is minoring in both biology and applied mathematics. Micaela is a full time research assistant on campus and is an officer in UHD's Environmental Club. In association with the club, she has helped construct gardens in the Houston area and clean up area bayous. Micaela participated in the 2007 Houston AIDS Walk and volunteered with the Kids' Market Day Festival. She has been on the Deans' List since she enrolled at the university. She won an annual scholarship from UHD's Scholars Academy. Micaela also received the Freshman Chemistry award in 2006. After graduation, she would like to continue her education and earn a Ph.D. in either neuroscience, physics, biochemistry or biomathematics. Micaela said, "I always try to enjoy the present and never resent the past. I want to grow into the person that I was created to be and never wait to improve myself until tomorrow, if I can do it today."

Lizzette Grimaldo is a junior, majoring in psychology. She came to UHD because of its small class sizes and its reputation for offering students a chance to work directly with faculty. Lizzette works part time on campus in the Cashier's Office. She is a member of the Gamma Alpha Omega Sorority. As a member of Alpha Omega, she has participated in activities ranging from visiting food banks and homeless shelters, to tutoring at various elementary schools in the region. She received the sorority's award for member recognition. She also volunteers at her church, helping with classes and festivals. Lizzette has been on the Deans' List for outstanding academic performance every semester she has been at the university. After graduation, Lizzette plans to continue her education and attend the College of Optometry at the University of Houston. She said, "I want to make a positive difference in people's lives. I want to be able to give my family a good life."

Maria Hernandez is a senior, majoring in finance, with a minor in accounting. In addition to being a full time mom to her two-year-old daughter, she works at her parents' landscaping business and volunteers at her local church. Last year, Maria received UHD's Red Rose Scholarship and the Mary Gibbs Jones Scholarship. This year, she received the Financial Executives International Scholarship, an award given to 12 finance students from 12 different universities in Southeast Texas. Maria belongs to UHD's Beta Gamma Sigma Honor Society and is a Deans' List student. After graduation, Maria plans to work at Merrill Lynch. She hopes to become a certified financial planner and start her own financial consulting business, eventually attaining a Ph.D. in finance.
"I always demand the best from myself and expect to obtain the best results possible in everything that I do," she said.

J. Michael Irving is a senior, majoring in biotechnology. He received an associate degree in science from Lone Star College (Cy-Fair). In addition to his service as a combat medic in the Texas Army National Guard, Michael works part time in the university's chemistry stockroom and is a trained member of the Community Emergency Response Team. He has received scholarships from UHD's Scholars Academy and is on the Deans' List. Irving is an Eagle Scout and continues to volunteer with The Boy Scouts of America in the Houston area. Michael plans to take the Medical College Admission Test in May and pursue a degree in medicine. He would like to eventually specialize in oncology or internal medicine. He also wants to continue serving in the Army National Guard.
"While pursuing a demanding career in medicine my main focus has been and always will be my family," he said.

Nguyen Lam is a senior, majoring in chemistry. He started his college career at San Jacinto College North and transferred to UHD in 2005. He works on campus as a math and science tutor at the Science Learning Center and as a supplemental instructor for math courses. Nguyen is president of UHD's Environmental Club and vice president of the Health Professionals Organization. He belongs to the Scholars Academy Honor Corps, serves as a peer mentor and was a part of the 2007 Joint Admission Medical Program. Nguyen received a Red Rose Scholarship last year and is also a Jesse H. Jones Scholarship recipient. He volunteers with Urban Harvest (a project to update and create gardens at local schools), and UHD's bayou cleanup. Describing his future plans, Nguyen says, "My future professional goal is to attend medical school, specialize, become a doctor, and volunteer in rural areas where help is needed the most."

Eloy Leyva is a senior, majoring in education, focusing on bilingual education. Eloy came to the university after working in a variety of odd jobs, ranging from construction to pizza delivery. He balances his family business of 10 years with going to school full time. In addition to raising his two children with his wife of 15 years, Eloy volunteers as a high council man at his church, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. In the past, Eloy was a full time missionary, a bishop and was chosen to be an assistant to the mission president. He volunteered to help the people affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and was involved in the Keep Five Alive Project. After receiving his degree, Eloy plans to earn a master's and doctoral degrees in education. "My goal is to be the best teacher in Houston; be a good role model for children who do not have one at home," he said.

Demetria Lisk is a senior, majoring in early childhood development. Born in Cebu, Philippines, she received an associate degree in secretarial science from Cebu Central Colleges. After moving to the United States in 1990, Demetria graduated from Houston Community College with an associate of arts degree. Demetria has two children and finds time to be active in their schools as well as in her church. She has volunteered for numerous projects for her church, the Houston Children's Chorus, the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, the Houston Children's Museum, The Shiners Coach Dean 21 Shot Tournament and the Briarmeadow Homeowners Association. Demetria plans to complete her degree and begin work as an early childhood teacher. "I have come a long way from babysitting cows on my parents' farm in the mountains of Cebu! I am working hard to realize my goal to graduate from UHD," she said.

Leigh Ann Love is a senior, majoring in accounting with a minor in economics. Before coming to UHD, Leigh Ann studied at Houston Community College and Austin Community College. As the first woman in her immediate family to attend college, Leigh Ann balances her family, school and a full time job at Energy Allied International. She volunteers her time with the Briargrove Elementary Parent Teacher Organizations, the Greater Houston Convention Center and Visitors Board, the Greater Houston Partnership, the Arab Bilateral Chamber of Commerce and the Post Oak Little League. After graduation, Leigh Ann plans to become a chief financial officer and eventually wants to start her own restaurant business with her husband, who works as a chef. "I feel like every day is an accomplishment and every day we learn and grow more than the day before. I like to stay focused on what I am going to accomplish," she said.

Liem Luong is a junior, majoring in computer science with a minor in applied math. He is the first member of his family to attend college, and has lived in the United States for only five years. In addition to being a tutor at UHD's Collaborative Learning and Community Center, he is a Scholars Academy peer mentor and a workshop leader for the Pre-College START program. Liem volunteers for the Special Olympics of Texas and the Northwest YMCA. He has received the Texas Pioneer Foundation Scholarship, National Science Foundation Scholarships, the Google Inc. Scholarship for research, the United States Army Research Office Scholarship and he has been on the university's Deans' List. After receiving his degree, Liem plans to go to graduate school and eventually earn a Ph.D. in computer science. As Liem describes himself, "I am the person who wants to achieve my goal. I have a determination to go beyond and above the difficulty in my life."

Jennifer Macchia is a junior, majoring in English and is working toward secondary education certification. As the first person in her immediate family to attend college, she also works full time at a law firm specializing in civil defense and employment law. Jennifer volunteers for Literacy Advance of Houston and as an English as a Second Language teacher for adult learners. She has also volunteered at the Houston Zoo and the DePelchin Children's Center. Jennifer has been on the Deans' List and has received the J. Don Boney Scholarship for part time students. Upon achieving her degree, she plans to teach English Literature or Language Arts at a high school while continuing her work with adult ESL students. She has excelled at university life while balancing academic goals with the everyday needs of her husband and four sons. Jennifer says she listened to what others told her when she chose her career in education. "I have been told by many people that I have a 'gift' for encouragement; I motivate people to overcome adversity and self-doubt and to do their best," she explained.

Mohamedwesam Mohamed moved from Egypt to the United States six years ago. After attending San Jacinto College for a year, he was accepted into the University of Houston-Downtown's Scholars Academy, with a major in biology and is currently a junior. In addition to working part time as a tutor at the university Science Learning Center, Mohamedwesam volunteers as a nurse aide at Memorial Hermann Southeast Hospital and is an Army Research Office Scholar. He interned for the University of Houston-Downtown START program for incoming freshmen, is vice president of the campus Health Professionals Organization, has been on the Deans' List and serves as a senator in the Student Government Association. Mohamedwesam is a member of the campus Environmental Club, Scholars Academy, Leeuwenhoek Society and the American Medical Student Association. After graduation, Mohamedwesam would like to go to medical school. He says, "My career goal is to become a competent, fair doctor who helps people despite their financial or social standing."

Shajeer Noorudeen went to San Jacinto College briefly, before transferring to the University of Houston-Downtown. He is a senior, majoring in chemistry with an emphasis in biochemistry and a minor in math. Shajeer moved to the United States in 2003 and has a part time job in the UHD Science Learning Center. He has volunteered for the Janowski Elementary School Garden Recreation Project, the UH-Downtown Bayou Cleanup, the East Houston Regional Medical Center and the Houston Hospice. Shajeer has received the Scholars Academy Army Research Office Scholarship and the Peer Led Team Learning Award. He presented his research work at the 62 nd American Chemical Society Southwest Regional Meeting in Houston. Upon earning his degree, Shajeer plans to continue his career in the field of medical science. "Becoming a physician to me means that the directions are numerous, and the possibilities are endless in the ever-growing dynamic fields of health and medicine," he said.

Marcus Paley is a senior, majoring in finance. He works as a personal banker at First Convenience Bank and formerly worked for three years as a store manager at the General Nutrition Center. At the General Nutrition Center, he won several awards for salesmanship. Marcus has received the College of Business Bobby Bizzell Memorial Scholarship and is a two-time recipient of the Jesse H. Jones Scholarship. He is a member of the International Business Association, the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and volunteers at Prison Fellowship Ministries. Upon receiving his bachelor's degree, Marcus would like to earn an MBA and become a Chief Financial Officer or Chief Executive Officer at a major business firm. Describing his interest in business, Marcus explains, "Entrepreneurship is something that I have given thought to recently as well. Therefore I am keeping my eye out for the next 'big idea'."

Kristi Pennington is a senior, majoring in microbiology. A Red Rose Scholar last year, she received the Mary Gibbs Jones Scholarship, the National Science Foundation STEP Scholarship and the Marc Grant. Kristi volunteers at Jones Elementary School in Houston, teaching students about microbiology. She has made presentations at the Student Research Conference, has attended the Summer Medical and Dental School Education Program and has conducted research under professors Jon Aoki of UHD and Kishore Shetty of the University of Texas. After receiving her degree, Kristi plans to attend dental school and earn her both a DDS and a Ph.D. She would like to start her own practice in the Houston area. When Kristi talks about the challenges in her life she says, "It was difficult at times having a newborn and trying to study for tests and write papers, but I think it has made me a stronger person and my son has added new meaning to my life. Now, I not only want to succeed for myself, but for my new family as well."

Brenda Rios is a junior majoring in international business and is the first member of her family to go to college in the United States. Brenda currently works at her family's restaurant in Stafford, Texas, and will soon begin an internship at BMC Software Company. She volunteers to play piano at her local church, she was on the volunteer chair committee for the 2007 Houston Freedom Festival, is co-president of the Student American Marketing Association and vice president of the International Business Association. Brenda belongs to Beta Gamma Sigma, the Houston Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the Deans' Co-Advisory Council. After graduation, she would like to earn either an MBA or a Master's in International Relations. Her hope is to leave the world a better place. "I later hope to achieve a governmental position where I can exercise my major, and where I can be an influence to make changes in the world," she said.

Danil Safin, a senior, will receive two degrees—a degree in computer science and another in applied mathematics. He attended Lone Star College for three semesters before he decided to transfer to University of Houston-Downtown, drawn by smaller class sizes and UHD's reputation for student-teacher interaction. Originally from Russia, Danil explains that he stays connected to his roots by playing chess and soccer. He is employed part time as a research assistant on campus, in Computer and Mathematical Sciences. Danil is a member of the Scholars Academy and has been on the Deans' List. He is also the president of the campus Association for Computing Machinery. Danil plans on earning his master's degree after graduation, with the hopes of working as a software engineer or pursuing another career path involving computer science. Danil explains, "I do view juggling all my classes, research work, personal life and managing to organize events for the organization, such as a trip to a regional programming contest, as an accomplishment."

Elva Sierra is a senior, majoring in chemistry. As the first member of her family to attend college, Elva graduated from high school in just three years and earned valedictorian honors. She was attracted to UHD's small class sizes. She volunteers at her church and she is part of a volunteer group called "Matachines" that dances at other churches and the Shriners Burns Hospital for Children. Elva has received the LSAMP Scholarship from the Scholars Academy and the Jesse H. Jones Scholarship. A member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, she is also a member of the university Environmental Club. After she earns her degree, Elva plans to continue in school and become a dentist. Describing herself, she says, "I believe that what makes me unique is the fact that I am a determined, mature, open-minded and well-informed young woman who is willing to prove that minorities can go beyond the expected stereotype."

Nick Spampinato is senior, pursuing a degree in biology with a minor in chemistry. As the first member of his family to go to college, he tutors UHD students in organic chemistry, genetics and general biology. Nick also works in the campus Science Learning Center. He was a Red Rose Scholar last year, in addition to receiving several Scholars Academy grants for natural science students. This year, Nick has received the Junior Stanley J. Kaplan Achievement Award, the Cohen Premedical Scholarship, and the Jesse H. Jones Scholarship. He also serves as vice president and cofounder of the Animal Awareness Association and executive officer of the Health Professions Organization. Nick is a member of the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society and the Health Professions Organization. After receiving his degree, he plans to go to medical school and would like to become a heart surgeon. Nick explains, "As a heart surgeon I hope to be able to help others the same way that I have been helped by so many in my life."

Tarfa Tarar is a junior, earning a degree in criminal justice with a minor in biology. She is the first woman in her family to come to the United States to study from Pakistan. She works on campus as a supplemental instructor in English, math, and sociology classes. Tarfa also works at Houston's M.D. Anderson Cancer Center as a research intern at the Melanoma Medical Oncology laboratory and volunteers at Methodist Hospital. She has received the Jesse H. Jones Scholarship and the Study Abroad Scholarship. Tarfa is a member of the Scholars Academy, the Muslim Student Association and the Health Professionals Organization. After graduation, this Dean's List student would like to enter a dual degree program to earn both medical and law degrees. Tarfa hopes to specialize in surgical oncology/cardiothoracic and health law. "The possible is only the beginning; the impossible is what changes our lives. I am someone who wants to change lives by redefining the impossible," she said.

Leah Wallace, a junior, is an English major and plans to attain teacher certification. The first in her immediate family to attend college, Leah also has three part time jobs at Houston Community College, where she is a laboratory assistant in the English department's writing laboratory, an in-class supplemental instructor for developmental English and an online supplemental instructor for English composition courses. Leah volunteers at her local church and is involved in UHD's art club and serves as president of Sigma Tau Delta. She also belongs to the international English honor society. She is on the Deans' List and received the Charles & Betti Saunders Drama Scholarship. Leah plans to earn a master's degree in education and plans on a career as a college professor. She explains, "Whatever my career path, I want to make a difference in my community one step at a time."

Eduardo Zapata a senior, majoring in psychology, also minors in philosophy. As the first person in his immediate family to attend college, he is also the first person in his family to finish high school. Eduardo works as a gate attendant with Guardian Personnel. He also works in the campus Learner's Community and is a supplemental instructor on campus in English composition. Eduardo has received the Houston Junior Chamber of Commerce Scholarship, UHD's Study Abroad Scholarship and the Jesse H. Jones Scholarship. He is the secretary/treasurer of the Philosophy Honor Society, a member of Phi Sigma Tau and a member of the National Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. After receiving his degree, Eduardo plans to continue graduate school in the field of psychology. Regarding his future plans, Eduardo said, "One aspect of this field of study that intrigues me is that I have a choice at this moment of whether to continue to graduate school or to proceed to medical school, a division that thrills me to explore." |
