Police Call Boxes
Yellow Police call boxes, like the ones pictured above, are located near
all entrances/exits to all buildings on campus, on all floors of the One
Main, Academic and Commerce Street Buildings, at the entrance and exit
to the parking garage and satellite parking areas. Police call boxes are
also located in all elevators but are not identified as the ones above.
Police assistance may be requested by activating any call box.

Security
Services
A now familiar sight to the university community are our security officers.
The security officers' presence is most noticed at the Commerce Street
and Shea Street Buildings in addition to the W.I. Dykes Library in the
One Main Building, however they may be seen all over campus. They are
here to reinforce the UH-Downtown Police Department's commitment to making
your educational endeavors safe and secure. Suspicious persons and/or
activities can also be reported directly to them or any UH-Downtown Police
Officer.
Motorist Assistance
Dead battery? Locked your keys in your vehicle? Police personnel will
be happy to assist you! To request assistance, contact the Police Department,
Suite 118-North, or notify the police dispatcher via any police call box.
Please note that due to safety considerations, UHD Police will not
attempt to jump start any vehicle in the rain or where standing water
interferes with this service. Vehicles parked in covered
parking garages will be accommodated.
Identification
It is recommended that all students, faculty, staff and visitors of the University of Houston-Downtown carry identification with them
while on University of Houston-Downtown property. Section 51.209 of the Texas Education Code states, "The governing board of the
state institution of higher education or its authorized representatives may refuse to allow persons having no legitimate business to
enter on property under the board's control, and may reject any undesirable
person from the property on his/her refusal to leave
peaceably. Identification may be required of any person on the property."
Police Officer Jurisdiction
The Texas Education Code defines the UH-Downtown Police Department's primary jurisdiction as all counties in which property is
owned, leased, rented or otherwise under the control of the University of Houston System Board of Regents and also includes streets
contiguous to and running through the campus. Within a peace officer's primary jurisdiction, a peace officer commissioned under this
section;
is vested with all the powers, privileges, and immunities of peace officers;
may, in accordance with Chapter 14, Code of Criminal Procedure, arrest without a warrant any person who violates a
law of the state; and
may enforce all traffic laws on streets and highways
County Citations
A county citation may be issued for traffic violations and for most Class C misdemeanors.
Resolution of county citations is as follows:
You have the right to a trial by judge or jury by appearing on the stated court date and time on the citation.
Pay the fine at the appropriate Justice of the Peace Court.
Failure to pay fine and/or appear on court date as promised may result in a warrant for your arrest being issued by the
appropriate Justice of the Peace.
Lost and Found
The Police Department Records Division, Suite 118-North, provides lost and found services for the university. All items received by the
Records Division are stored for a period of 30 calendar days. After 30 days, unclaimed items are destroyed, auctioned or donated to
a charitable organization.
The W.I. Dykes Library, Academic Computing Lab (Room 800S) and some other departments operate separate lost and found
services. Usually at the end of academic semesters, these departments turn in these items into the Police Department's Lost and
Found. These items, due to extended time period in which they are kept, are immediately destroyed, auctioned or donated to a
charitable organization.
Police Records
To request a copy of an accident report, incident report and/or information
report, come by the University Police Department, Suite 118-North in the
One Main Building, and complete a Texas Public Information Act
Request Form . Processing of the form can take up to ten (10)
business days.
Texas Public Information Act Request Forms are forwarded
to the UH System Office of General Counsel for that office to determine,
in accordance with applicable Texas law, what, if any, of the information
requested will be released. An attorney from the UH System Office will
then contact you in the time allowed under Texas law.
Requests for copies will not be honored unless the Texas Public
Information Act Request Form is completed.
