Waiting to find a local healthcare facility when you are sick or have an emergency can be very stressful if you have not done your homework. 
What will you do if you have a urgent healthcare need and Student Health Services and your doctor's office does not have a same-day appointment available or it is after hours?
Education and personal responsibility are very important to taking charge of your healthcare.
Don't wait until you have an urgent healthcare need to determine where you should go for treatment.  Using an Emergency Room for urgent care is expensive and time consuming.  Take the time to locate the nearest Ambulatory/Urgent Care facilities and Emergency Rooms in your area. 
 
 
Some of the questions you should answer when choosing a healthcare facility are:
a Location: 
 
 
Take the time to find the location so you are familiar with the area.
a Hours of Operation:
 
 
Choose a facility that has the best hours for your needs.
a Appointments: 
 
 
Does the facility require appointments or does it accept walk-ins.
a Services: 
 
 
Know the level of care that is available at that facility.   Would using an Ambulatory/Urgent Care facility instead of an Emergency Room be the best choice for you illness or injury?
a Cost: 
 
 
Know what the basic charges may be.   As in your doctor's office, it is difficult to understand what charges you would be responsibility for until you are seen.  You should  take the time now to ask about office visit fees and if the facility accepts insurance (if applicable). 
    If you have health insurance, you should speak with the carrier to verify what coverage you may have for an Urgent Care facility.  Not knowing your insurance coverage can be a costly mistake.

Healthcare can be very expensive and not taking care of your health can cost you more. Don't wait to find out repercussions of not taking care of your health because you feel that you have no resources. 
    There are options available for those who do not have health insurance available through work.  Don't wait until you have a healthcare need to check into these options.
