Campus Information Center

The Campus Information Center, located in suite N355, serves as a resource to visitors to campus, providing information about UHD and the surrounding community. Students are encouraged to utilize the Center for information regarding their admissions and registration status, financial aid, or other questions about attending classes at UHD. Open M-TR, 8am – 6pm, Friday 8am – 5pm and on Saturday from 9am – 12 noon.
Career Services

On the cutting edge of electronic technology, Career Services offers support, information, and counseling to students and alumni who wish to explore their career options. This office helps students develop academic and extracurricular programs to support and enhance career options through such tools as interest inventories and temperament indicators, available both in the Career Services Resource Center and on the Internet. An online resume bank and job-listing site, eRecruiting, lends itself well to the proactive, self-directed job search of today. Information about labor market and salary trends and career options are also available. In addition, UHD’s Field Experience Program offers qualified students the opportunity to integrate classroom learning with work experience, granting up to six semester credit hours to students working in their fields of study. Information regarding this program, as well as other services, is available in the Career Services office.
Counseling Services - Student Assistance Program (SAP)

The Student Assistance Program (SAP) is designed to help you maximize your health and effectiveness at home, school or work. Through this program, you receive confidential, personal support for a wide range of issues, from everyday concerns to serious problems. Whether you want advice about a financial concern, need to talk to someone about drug use, or are simply feeling overwhelmed by school life, your SAP can help. You have access to both online --through www.liveandworkwell.com -- and in-person support for a wide range of issues.
If you want to ask a question or request a service, just call our toll-free number 1-866-802-8553 (24hrs/7). You will be immediately connected to an experienced clinician. Available anytime, these clinicians are experts in helping people identify the nature of their problems and finding the right resources to address them.
All records, including medical information, referrals and evaluations, are kept confidential in accordance with federal and state laws.
Disability Services

Disability Services assists students with placement testing, priority registration and scheduling, academic advising and counseling and academic accommodations. The staff also advises instructors on classroom accommodation techniques, provides assistance with locating tutors and is a faculty/student and community/agency liaison.
E-Services
In our ongoing effort to provide better, faster and more convenient access to our students, both on- and off-campus, UHD has created its student e-services website. E-services allow you to use your web access from home, work or school to:

Gatormail
UHD assigns student e-mail accounts (accessible on e-services) as a means of communication between faculty, staff, and students. The use of e-mail services should be for legitimate educational purposes. The Office of Student Services & Enrollment Management governs access to student e-mail services.
Multimedia Services

Multimedia Services provides assistance to the University community in presenting, producing, and distributing instructional media. Media productions include studio and location photography, audio and video taping, audio and video duplication, video editing, and the creation of presentation graphics.
Multimedia stores and circulates presentation equipment for use in classrooms, lecture halls, and academic offices. It oversees the operations of University lecture halls, the auditorium and the Instructional Television Studio located in the Technology Teaching and Learning Center.
Multimedia Services coordinates the broadcast of instructional television courses to off-campus sites as well as the production and distribution of telecourses. For more information, see the Information Resources/Multimedia Services website www.uhd.edu/computing/multimedia.htm.
Parking

The Parking Office coordinates student, staff, and faculty parking at UHD. With the exception of the VISITORS parking area, a valid parking permit is required to park in any of the UHD parking lots. A student with a valid permit may park, day or night, at the Daly Street parking lot located at 500 North Main, the Shea Street parking lot located at Shea and North Main, and/or the Naylor Street parking lot located at Naylor and North Main and/or the Washington Street lot located between Milam and Louisiana Streets. Shuttle buses run continuously, Monday through Friday, between the University and the Daly Street parking lot. Permits are not required on weekends. Students with permits issued by UH, UH-Clear Lake, and UH-Victoria may park in any of the lots mentioned above. Students attending the Sugar Land Campus are required to purchase a permit from that campus. Permits are issued by semester and cost $50 for Red Day - $60 for Red Night for the fall and spring semesters; $25 for Red Day - $35 for Red Night for each summer session. Covered parking for two-wheel vehicles is also available. The cost is $7 for the fall and spring semesters and $4 for each summer session. The usual hours of operation for the Parking Office are Monday-Thursday 7:00 a.m.- 7:30 p.m. and Friday 7:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m.

Preventing the Abuse of Substances and Self (PASS)
PASS provides confidential services aimed at prevention of alcohol and drug abuse and other addiction-related behaviors. Free substance-abuse screening, individual counseling, group counselling, workshops, outreach, consultation and referral services are offered. The PASS counselor is a certified alcohol and drug abuse counselor and may be contacted in person or by calling the PASS confidential line at 713-221-8989. Interested students may join the PASS Peer Educators, a volunteer group devoted to fighting the war on drugs.
Student Health Services

Student Health Services focuses on health promotion, disease prevention, and treatment of minor illnesses and injuries. Clinicians provide the same primary care found in most physicians’ offices (including women’s health) and offer referrals to specialists in the community when necessary. Routine laboratory services, pregnancy testing, and confidential HIV testing and counseling are provided. The pharmacy fills in-clinic prescriptions at low cost and offers some non-prescription medications for sale. Nurses provide counseling on a wide variety of health issues and offer special screenings and services throughout the year. Appointments are recommended for these services. In addition, educational brochures on a variety of health-related subjects are available as are applications for student health insurance.
Student ID Cards

Your student ID card identifies you as a student of UHD and is required for various activities, services, and academic functions. You will need an ID to check out library books, make an appointment at the health center, use the student life center facilities or use the computer labs. Your UHD student ID will also allow you to borrow books from any library in the University of Houston System. There is no fee for your initial student ID; however, there is a small charge to have it replaced if lost or stolen. ID cards can be obtained from the Office of Student Activities & Events.
Student Services & Enrollment Management

The Office of Student Services and Enrollment Management serves as a resource to students by distributing information, assisting with problem resolution and interpreting university policies, rules and procedures. This office is also responsible for carrying out the university’s student discipline policies. Among the information Student Services and Enrollment Management provides to students and the university community are the UHD Student Handbook, UHD Registration & Information Bulletin and the Campus Information Board.
Testing Services

To support new and current students, Testing Services personnel administer UH-Downtown, state and national tests. Local pre¬pared tests include the Writing Proficiency Examination and the foreign language (Spanish) placement examinations. Several national tests are provided by testing personnel, including the General Education Development (GED), College Level Examination Program (CLEP), Law School of Admission Test (LSAT), Medical College Admission Test (MCAT), Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA), American College Testing Assessment (ACT) and the SAT I and II. Registration deadlines are about one month prior to test dates. Registration information and forms for most tests are contained in test bulletins available in Testing Services. The ACCUPLACER/WritePlacer exam, one of the approved Texas Success Initiative (TSI) assessments recommended to new college freshmen, is offered by Testing Services to UHD students only.
University Police

The University Police provide 24-hour police services, operate the Lost and Found, escort students to their cars upon request, and provide general assistance to UHD students, faculty, and staff. Information on campus safety and security, including five-year crime statistics, is provided on the UHD Police Department website at www.uhd.edu/campus/pd/. Also available are safety and crime prevention information, campus policies on alcohol, firearms and sexual assault, crime alerts and more.
Veterans Affairs

Veterans’ Affairs assists veterans, reservists, guardsmen and dependents of disabled or deceased veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces. Over 400 veterans are currently enrolled at UH-Downtown.
This area of the Registrar’s Office ensures that proper paperwork is completed, certified and filed with the Department of Veterans’ Affairs so that payment of education benefits can begin. Veterans’ Affairs does not determine eligibility for benefits. You must request certification for each semester enrolled as soon as the registration period begins. For more information, contact UHD’s VA representative. If you qualify or have questions about the Hazelwood Act, you should contact the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.
