Bayou Review

The Bayou Review is a literary magazine with a bi-annual publication of poetry, fiction, essays, reviews, and visual art . The Bayou Review is primarily a product of UHD students, but faculty and staff submissions are invited, too. The magazine seeks to promote arts and humanities at UHD and serves as a forum for students who have an interest in creative writing and the arts. Campus Activities Board

The Campus Activities Board (CAB) provides a valuable service to the UHD community. It is CAB’s goal to meet the diverse needs of the student body by offering a variety of educational and entertainment programs. Dateline : Downtown

The Dateline is the student newspaper at the University. It is published bi-monthly each long semester and is distributed free-of-charge to students, staff, and faculty.

The Student Publications Committee, consisting of faculty, staff, and students, sets policy for the publication and operation of the newspaper and Bayou Review. A student editor is selected by the committee and has responsibility for recommending additional staff in conjunction with the faculty advisor. If you are interested in submitting items or learning more about the publication call or stop by the office.

Drama

UHD presents one theatrical production each long semester in the O’Kane Theater. Participation is open to students, faculty, staff and alumni. Auditons are held prior to each production for those who wish to perform. Those interested in working on a produciton crew are also welcome.

Locker Rental

Tired of carrying books all day? UHD offers a 12 x 35 x 18 combination locker on either the 2nd and 4th floor of the One Main Building. Lockers are rented at a cost of $15 for the entire semester and can be renewed at the end of the semester.

O'Kane Gallery

The O’ Kane Gallery is a center for visual arts in downtown Houston. The gallery presents five to six exhibitions annually of artworks by regional, national and international artists. Exhibitions of contemporary and historic artwork in all media provide educational support to various University forums, meetings, and receptions. The gallery serves the diverse interests of the students, faculty and staff of UHD and the entire Houston community. Gallery hours are 10 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, during the fall and spring semesters. Exhibitions are free and open to the public.

One Main Event

One Main Event is an annual spring event that recognizes outstanding achievement and leadership of UHD students. Typically one of the largest University-wide events, it is organized by the office of Student Activities & Events. For information, contact the office of Student Activities & Events.

Sports and Fitness

Sports & Fitness provides members with programs and facilities that offer vigorous, fun-filled, health-promoting, physical activity conducive to wellness and personal development. Through a well-equipped recreational facility, fitness programs, intramural sports and sport clubs activities, members will be motivated to embrace a healthy life-style, which may ultimately enhance their quality of life.

  • Membership
    The programs and services of Sports & Fitness are open to all UHD students, faculty and staff at no additional fees. UHD Alumni Society members may purchase a Sports & Fitness Membership at an annual $60.00 fee.
  • Jesse H. Jones Student Life Center
    The three-level, 30,000-square-foot Jesse H. Jones Student Life Center includes two ball courts equipped for basketball, volleyball, and badminton; a multipurpose studio designed for aerobics and martial arts; and a fitness center with state-of-the-art weight equipment and cardiovascular units. Lockers and showers are available.
  • Fitness Programs
    Fitness programs are offered at various times throughout the week from certified instructors. Programs include: Aerobics, Karate, Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, Yoga, Hip Hop, and Latin Dance. Personal trainers are available to members for a nominal fee. The initial fitness assessment is free of charge. \
  • Intramural Sports
    Intramural sports programs are designed to provide opportunities for UHD members to participate in organized sports activities. Individual and team sports are offered in over 15 different sports. Leagues are created for competitive and just-for-fun participants alike, and there are several activities where men and women team-up for co-recreational sports.
  • Sport Clubs
    Sport Clubs provide members with opportunities to share common interests and pursue active involvement and improvement in a sport or activity. Clubs are encouraged to represent the university at local, regional and national competitions.

Student Activities & Events

The Office of Student Activities & Events is always interested in meeting students and helping them achieve their goals inside and outside of the classroom. Your first priority at UHD should always be to achieve student success. It is the philosophy of Student Activities that students should experience learning inside and outside of the classroom.  In addition to working with student organizations, this area is responsible for several university programs including Commencement, Project Leadership UHD and New Student Orientation, and hosts numerous events for students during the school year.

Becoming involved with activities and organizations on campus is a fun way to meet people and form friendships. This involvement outside the classroom can also help you to develop the communication and leadership skills essential to obtaining a job and succeeding in the world after college. With almost 50 organizations and numerous programs to choose from, the Office of Student Activities & Events offers students a world of opportunities to become involved at UHD and in the community.

Student Government Association (SGA)

The Student Government Association (SGA) is the representative body for all UHD students. SGA is responsible for nominating students to serve on university committees and for chairing the Council of Organizations, which is the representative body for all clubs and organizations. SGA is involved in policy development activities through its participation in the shared governance process.

Volunteer Center

The UHD Volunteer Center serves as a clearinghouse of volunteer opportunities for UHD student organizations, individual students, faculty and staff, as well as others interested in the UHD community. Our hours are Monday-Friday, 8a.m. to 5p.m.

It acts as a liaison between the university and community, promotes public service, fosters individual student development and provides various leadership development opportunities for students.

Students can make a difference at school and in the community by volunteering. Some professors will also give extra credit for making a difference as a student volunteer.
