Career Services

On the cutting edge of electronic technology, Career Services offers support, information, and counseling to students and alumni who wish to explore their career options. This office can help students develop academic and extracurricular programs to support and enhance career options through such tools as interest inventories and temperament indicators, available both in the Career Services Resource Center and on the Internet. Our online resume bank and job-listing site lends itself well to the proactive, self-directed job search of today. Information about labor market and salary trends and career options are also available. In addition, UHD's Field Experience program offers qualified students the opportunity to integrate classroom learning with work experience, granting up to six semester credit hours to students working in their field of study. Information regarding this program as well as other services is available in the Career Services office, N370.
Counseling Services - Student Assistance Program (SAP)

The Student Assistance Program (SAP) is designed to help you maximize your health and effectiveness at home, school or work. Through this program, you receive confidential, personal support for a wide range of issues, from everyday concerns to serious problems.
Whether you want advice about a financial concern, need to talk to someone about drug use, or are simply feeling overwhelmed by school life, your SAP can help. You have access to both online --through www.liveandworkwell.com -- and in-person support for a wide range of issues.
If you want to ask a question or request a service, just call our toll-free number. You will be immediately connected to an experienced clinician. Available anytime, these clinicians are experts in helping people identify the nature of their problems and finding the right resources to address them.
All records, including medical information, referrals and evaluations, are kept confidential in accordance with federal and state laws.
Disabled Student Services

Disabled Student Services assists students with placement testing, priority registration and scheduling, academic advising and counseling and academic accommodations. The staff also advises instructors on classroom accommodation techniques, provides assistance with locating tutors and is a faculty/student and community/agency liaison.
E-Services
In our ongoing effort to provide better, faster and more convenient access to our students, both on- and off-campus, UHD has created its student e-services website. E-services allow you to use your web access from home, work or school to:

Gatormail
UHD assigns student e-mail accounts (accessible on e-services) as a means of communication between faculty, staff, and students. The use of e-mail services should be for legitimate educational purposes. The Office of the Dean of Student Affairs governs access to student e-mail services.
Information Center

The Information Center serves as a central resource, referral, and visitor center. The Information Center provides in-person and telephone assistance for students, prospective students and the general public regarding all aspects of the University.
The Information Center also issues ID cards to students, faculty and staff, and maintains an active telephone directory. Students may pick up a Class Schedule, Student Handbook, or Catalog from the Information Center and purchase scantrons and blue books when the Bookstore is closed.
Multimedia Services

Multimedia Services provides assistance to the University community in presenting, producing, and distributing instructional media. Media productions include studio and location photography, audio and video taping, audio and video duplication, video editing, and the creation of presentation graphics.
Multimedia stores and circulates presentation equipment for use in classrooms, lecture halls, and academic offices. It oversees the operations of University lecture halls, the auditorium and the Instructional Television Studio located in the Technology Teaching and Learning Center.
Multimedia Services coordinates the broadcast of instructional television courses to off-campus sites as well as the production and distribution of telecourses. For more information, see the Information Resources/Multimedia Services website www.uhd.edu/computing/multimedia.htm.
Parking

The Parking Office coordinates student, staff, and faculty parking at UHD. With the exception of the VISITORS parking area, a valid parking permit is required to park in any of the UHD parking lots. A student with a valid permit may park, day or night, at the Daly Street parking lot located at 500 North Main, the Shea Street parking lot located at Shea and North Main, and/or the Naylor Street parking lot located at Naylor and North Main and/or the Washington Street lot located between Milam and Louisiana Streets. Shuttle buses run continuously, Monday through Friday, between the University and the Daly Street parking lot. Permits are not required on weekends. Students with permits issued by UH, UH-Clear Lake, and UH-Victoria may park in any of the lots mentioned above. Students attending the Sugar Land Campus are required to purchase a permit from that campus.
Permits are issued by semester and cost $50 for Red Day - $60 for Red Night for the fall and spring semesters; $18 for Red Day - $25 for Red Night for each summer session. Covered parking for two-wheel vehicles is also available. The cost is $7 for the fall and spring semesters and $4 for each summer session. The usual hours of operation for the Parking Office are Monday-Thursday 7:00 a.m.- 7:30 p.m. and Friday 7:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m.
PASS

The Preventing the Abuse of Substances and Self (PASS) program is a Student Assistance Program offering intervention, consultation, and referral for drug/alcohol abuse issues. Students are invited to volunteer to be a part of the PASS Posse, a group of trained peer educators who provide peer intervention on wellness and drug/alcohol issues. Also, through the PASS program, students can participate in 12-step programs like Alcoholics Anonymous or Adult Children of Alcoholics. A certified alcohol/drug abuse counselor can answer any questions or concerns over a confidential line.
Student Affairs

The Office of Student Affairs serves as a resource to students by distributing information, assisting with problem resolution and interpreting university policies, rules, and procedures. Student Affairs produces the UHD Student Handbook and the Class Schedule. Student Affairs includes Enrollment Services, Information Center, Career, Counseling, Student Health Services, Scholarships and Financial Aid, Student Activities, Testing Services, Orientation, and Sports and Fitness. If you have questions, suggestions or concerns as a student of UHD stop by the Office of Student Affairs.
Student Health Services

Student Health Services focuses on health promotion, disease prevention, and treatment of minor illnesses and injuries. Our clinicians provide the same primary care found in most physicians' offices (including women's health), and offer referrals to specialists in the community when necessary. Routine laboratory services, pregnancy testing, and confidential HIV testing and counseling are provided. The pharmacy will fill in-clinic prescriptions at low cost and also offers some non-prescription medications for sale. Our nurses provide counseling on a wide variety of health issues and offer special screenings and services throughout the year. Educational brochures on a variety of health-related subjects are also available. Applications for student health insurance may be obtained at the office of Student Health Services, N380.
Student ID Cards

Your student ID card identifies you as a student of UHD and is required for various activities, services, and academic functions. You will need an ID to check out library books, make an appointment at the health center, use the student life center facilities or use the computer labs. Your UHD student ID will also allow you to borrow books from any of the other three libraries in the University of Houston System. Validation stickers are required on your ID each semester. There is no fee for your initial student ID; however, there is a small charge to have it replaced if lost or stolen. ID cards can be obtained from the Office of Student Activities & Events.
Testing Services

To support new and current students, Testing Services personnel administer UH-Downtown, state and national tests. Local prepared tests include the Writing Proficiency Examination (WPE) and the foreign language (Spanish) placement examination. Several national tests, including GED, CLEP, LSAT, MCAT, THEA, ACT, and the SAT, are administered by testing personnel. Registration deadlines are about one month prior to test dates. Registration information and forms for most tests are contained in test bulletins available in Testing Services, Room 370-South.
TASP has been replaced with the Texas Success Initiative (TSI). Delay in taking one of the four TSI-approved tests can prevent you from registering for classes and may delay your graduation. The four options are ASSET, WP/ACCUPLACER, COMPASS, and THEA (formerly known as TASP). Texas law requires that you take one of the TSI-approved tests before you enroll, unless you are exempt.
University Police

The University Police provide 24-hour police services, operate the Lost and Found, escort students to their cars upon request, and provide general assistance to UHD students, faculty, and staff.
Veterans Affairs

The Office of Veterans Affairs serves as a liaison for the Department of Veterans Affairs in the facilitation of educational benefits. The office provides enrollment certification for eligible veteran students under Chapters 30, 31, 35, and 1606. If you are going to utilize your VA benefits under any of these chapters, contact the VA office (located in the Registrar's office) for all your enrollment needs.
If you qualify or have questions about the Hazlewood Act, you should contact the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid.
You must request certification for each semester enrolled as soon as the registration period begins. For more information, contact the VA office.
