Campus Activities Board

The Campus Activities Board (CAB) provides a valuable service to the UHD community.  It is CAB's goal to meet the diverse needs of the student body by offering a variety of educational and entertainment programs.  If you enjoy working with people and would like to have a hand in programming on our campus, CAB is the place for you!  For more information, contact the Office of Student Activities.

Locker Rental

Tired of carrying books all day?  Lockers are available for rent on a semester-to-semester basis.  Lockers are located on the second and fourth floors of the One Main Building.  For more information, contact the Office of Student Activities & Events.

O'Kane Gallery

The O' Kane Gallery is a center for visual arts in downtown Houston.  The gallery presents five to six exhibitions annually of artworks by regional, national and international artists.  Exhibitions of contemporary and historic artwork in all media provide educational support to various University forums, meetings, and receptions. The gallery serves the diverse interests of the students, faculty and staff of UHD and the entire Houston community. Gallery hours are 10 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, during the fall and spring semesters.  Exhibitions are free and open to the public.

One Main Event

One Main Event is an annual spring event that recognizes outstanding achievement and leadership of UHD students.  Typically one of the largest University-wide events, it is organized by the office of Student Activities & Events. For information, contact the office of Student Activities & Events.

Sports and Fitness

Sports and Fitness serves as a vital and integral part of student life on campus providing the university community with programs that offer vigorous, fun-filled, health promoting, physical activities conducive to wellness and personal development.  Sports and Fitness supports the mission of UHD by seeking to create a climate that motivates members to embrace a healthy lifestyle, which can build friendships and social skills, develop leadership qualities, and cultivate a sense of belonging to the university.  UHD students are second to none and deserve a first rate program.  For more information, call 713-221-8225 or email sports&fitness@uhd.edu.

 
Facilities

The three-level, 30,000-square-foot Jesse H. Jones Student Life Center includes two ball courts, equipped for full court basketball, volleyball, and badminton; the fitness center, with state of the art weight equipment and cardiovascular units; a multipurpose studio designed for aerobics and martial arts; lockers and showers. See a Sports and Fitness staff member for locker rental information. Use of the facilities is available to currently enrolled UHD students who have a UHD student ID.

Fitness Programs

Fitness programs are offered at various times throughout the week and offer informative instruction from certified instructors.  Aerobics, Kickboxing, Karate, Tai Chi, Tae Kwon Do, Yoga, and Latin dance are only a few of the programs offered.  Nationally certified personal trainers are available for those wanting assistance in accomplishing their health and fitness goals. This is done one-on-one through fitness assessments and personal training sessions.  The sessions provide an opportunity for one to learn about the various dimensions of physical fitness including cardiovascular endurance, body composition, flexibility, muscular strength and nutrition.  Some fitness programs require an additional fee.  See a Fitness Programs Catalog for more details.

Intramural Sports

Intramural sports are designed to provide opportunities for students to participate in organized sports activities.  Individual and team activities are offered in over 15 different sports.  Some sports include basketball, volleyball, flag football, soccer and softball.  Leagues are created for competitive and just-for-fun participants alike, and there are several activities where men and women combine for co-recreational sports.  See an Intramural Sports Catalog for more details. 

Sport Clubs

Sport clubs provide opportunities to share common interests, pursue active involvement and improvement or even a higher level of competition in a sport or activity. Clubs are encouraged to represent the University at local, regional, and national competitions.  Some sport clubs include volleyball and soccer.

 

Student Activities & Events

The Office of Student Activities & Events is always interested in meeting students and helping them achieve their goals inside and outside of the classroom.  Your first priority at UHD should always be to achieve student success.  It is the philosophy of Student Activities that students should experience learning inside and outside of the classroom.  In addition to working with student organizations, this area is responsible for several university programs including Commencement, Project Leadership UHD and New Student Orientation, and hosts numerous events for students during the school year.

Becoming involved with activities and organizations on campus is a fun way to meet people and form friendships.  This involvement outside the classroom can also help you to develop the communication and leadership skills essential to obtaining a job and succeeding in the world after college.  With almost 50 organizations and numerous programs to choose from, the Office of Student Activities & Events offers students a world of opportunities to become involved at UHD and in the community. 

Student Government

The Student Government Association is the representative body of all UHD students.  The SGA is composed of three governmental branches: the executive, the legislative, and the judicial.  They nominate students to serve on University committees. 

The SGA is also responsible for chairing the Council of Organizations, which serves as the representative body of all clubs and organizations.  The Student Government Association depends on your input. To attend the weekly SGA meetings, stop by S244 or call 713-221-8570.

The Bayou Review

The Bayou Review is a literary magazine with a bi-annual publication of poetry, essays, reviews, photos, and/or drawings.  The Bayou Review is primarily a product of UHD students, but faculty and staff submissions are welcome.  The magazine seeks to promote arts and humanities at UHD and serves as a forum for students who have an interest in creative writing.  For more information about the Bayou Review, please call or come by our office.

The Dateline

The Dateline is the student newspaper at the University.  It is published bi-monthly each long semester and is distributed free-of-charge to students, staff, and faculty.

The Student Publications Committee, consisting of faculty, staff, and students, sets policy for the publication and operation of the newspaper and Bayou Review.  A student editor is selected by the committee and has responsibility for recommending additional staff in conjunction with the faculty advisor.  If you are interested in submitting items or learning more about the publication call or stop by the office.

Volunteer Center

The UHD Volunteer Center serves as a clearinghouse of volunteer opportunities for UHD student organizations, individual students, faculty and staff, as well as others interested in the UHD community.  Our hours are Monday-Friday, 8a.m. to 5p.m.

It acts as a liaison between the university and community, promotes public service, fosters individual student development and provides various leadership development opportunities for students.

Students can make a difference at school and in the community by volunteering.  Some professors will also give extra credit for making a difference as a student volunteer.
