The Walter Prescott
Webb Historical Society at UH-Downtown is a charter member of
the statewide affiliate of the Texas State Historical Association
and is the oldest still existing student organization on campus.
Through
travel, research, and presentations it encourages interest in
local and state history. It has been instrumental in researching
and funding historical markers of the Texas Historical Commission
in the Houston area, improving housing for the needy, and raising
money for local charities, particularly, the Houston Food Bank.
Our
chapter meets twice yearly with the state organization and engages
in independent travel to historical places. Members have
visited historical Jefferson, Castroville, and Goliad, Corpus
Christi, the George and King Ranches, Spindletop at Beaumont,
San Antonio missions, and museums and other sites in Austin, Dallas,
Fort Worth, and Waco.
The
Webb Society has no membership fees and does not require a major
in History.
