Receiving Your Benefits

The Department of Veterans Affairs issues payments monthly. Your payment will be released only after you have verified your enrollment. Click here for payment rates.

This verification can be done either by using the Web Automated Verification of Enrollment (WAVE) application or by using an automated telephone system (IVR) at 1-877-823-2378 and follow the prompts.

Since the VA issues checks after the month has passed, your initial check will not arrive before the UH-Downtown early payment deadline for tuition and fees. Therefore you must pay your tuition and fees from another source while awaiting your benefits payments. Click here for UH-Downtown payment options and methods.

If you are unable to utilize UH-Downtown's payment options and methods, you may qualify for an emergency tuition loan (Fall and Spring semesters only). Contact the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid for more information about qualifying for an emergency loan.

Another option for eligible veterans is an advance payment from the VA. If you meet the requirements for this option, you will receive your initial VA check before the semester begins so that you can make your tuition payment by the deadline. Contact Veterans Services for more information about advanced payment.
