Texas Success Initiative Assessment
The State of Texas requires that all students take or show exemption from an assessment test prior to enrolling in college-level courses in a public institution.Several options are available: THEA (formerly TASP), ASSET, COMPASS, or ACCUPLACER.If you have already taken one of these tests, or if you are exempt from testing, you must submit official documentation of your scores to the Office of Admissions. |
The AccuPlacer/WritePlacer
is one of four assessment instruments approved by the Texas
Higher Education Coordinating Board to satisfy the Texas Success Initiative.
It is also the
university's placement examination (AccuPlacer) combined with an essay
(WritePlacer).

Steps to register for and take the AccuPlacer/WritePlacer:
- Obtain a placement
form from the Academic Advising Center (360-South).
Freshmen: AccuPlacer/WritePlacer will be administered during Orientation.
- Report to Testing
Services (280-South) between 8:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon on a
scheduled testing date
What to bring:
- Enrollment Status form
- Two pieces of identification (Current Official Photo ID must be
issued by a school,
employer, or city/state/federal government agency)
- $29.00 for exam fee
- Several sharpened No. 2 pencils (with erasers)
Getting test results:
You can find out your AccuPlacer/WriterPlacer results immediately following the test by sitting with an Academic Advisor in the Academic Advising Center (360-South).
The Accuplacer/WritePlacer is offered only to UH-Downtown students. If you have not been admitted to UH-Downtown please check your admissions status at
