The Master of Science in Criminal Justice degree offered by the department of Criminal Justice prepares graduates of the program with the necessary skills and knowledge in the areas of criminal justice administration, program evaluation, and criminological theory. ____ Baccalaureate Degree
    A baccalaureate degree or the U.S. equivalent of a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution.
____ Application Fee
   

There is a non-refundable application fee of $60.00 (check or money order). A non-refundable late application fee of $100.00 will apply after May 1 (Summer and Fall admission) and after October 15 (Spring admission). Please note these deadlines may not be the program-specific application deadlines for the program you are applying to. Please indicate your name, UHD ID and date of birth on the check or money order. You may also pay by credit card. Information on the type of credit cards accepted and information needed are on the Texas Common Application.

     
____ Official Transcripts
   

Your foreign college transcripts must be evaluated by an evaluation service recognized by UHD. Visit the list of suggested evaluation services page.

If you attended a college or university in the United States you must have official transcripts sent to the Office of Admissions-Graduate Admissions. A transcript is considered official when it bears the institution’s seal, is signed by the issuing authority, and is sent directly by the institution or delivered in a sealed envelope from the institution, or is sent electronically to UHD from the issuing institution. Official transcripts must be less than a year old.

Former UHD students may request UHD transcripts free of charge. Visit the Registrar’s Office website for more information.

     
____ Test Scores
   

GRE/MAT/GMAT:
You are required to take the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) General or the Miller's Analogies Test (MAT) or the Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT) before being admitted to the Master's Program in Criminal Justice. You should have your official scores sent to the Office of Admissions. Scores are valid only for tests taken within the last five years.

• To have your GRE scores reported to UHD, use the graduate institution code R6922. You may register for the GRE on-line at www.ets.org/gre or by calling 1-800-GRE-CALL (1-800-473-2255).

•  To have your MAT scores reported to UHD, use the institution code 2563 . Information on the MAT can be found at www.MillerAnalogies.com. To register for the MAT, contact Harcourt Assessment at 1-800-622-3231.

•  To have your GMAT scores reported to UHD, use the program code LMJ-BK-08. You may register for the GMAT on-line at www.mba.com or by calling 1-800-717-GMAT.

TOEFL:
You are required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) if you are a graduate of a university in which English is not the native language. A minimum score of 550 with section scores of 50 or higher for the paper-based version is required for admission, a minimum score of 213 with section scores of 20 or higher for the computer-based version, or a minimum score of 80 with section scores of 20 or higher for the internet-based test. You should have your official scores sent to the Office of Admissions.

____ Personal Statement
    Submit a personal statement describing how you believe your educational and professional background will contribute to your success in this program. It should contain no more than 500 words.
     
____ Letters of Reference
   

Submit original letters from three individuals acquainted with your work and academic potential, for example, work supervisors and professors.

Individuals who hold non-immigrant visas are classified as international students. Individuals who have applied for immigrant status, but who have not adjusted their status with the Immigration and Naturalization Service, must also apply for international admission.
____ Affidavit of Support
    You must submit an original Affidavit of Support indicating that a sponsor will be responsible for all of your educational and living expenses.
____ Bank Letter
   

You must provide a certified bank letter indicating that your sponsor is financially capable of meeting your education and living expenses. The bank letter must indicate, either in U.S. dollars or in the local currency, the amount maintained in your sponsors’ bank account(s). The letter must have been issued within the past six months.

     
____ Permission Release
    In order to protect your privacy rights, the Office of International Admissions requires that you give written permission specifying the person(s) who may access information concerning the status of your application and/or admission to UH-Downtown. If you wish to designate someone to have verbal and physical access to this information, please complete the Permission Release form.
     
____ Statement of Understanding
   

You must understand and agree to each statement on the Statement of Understanding form in order to be considered for admission.

     
____ Transfer Students
    If you are transferring from another college or university in the United States, you must submit a Foreign Student Advisor’s Report transfer form that has been completed and signed by the foreign student advisor at the previously attended institution. This form must be returned to the Office of Admissions at UHD prior to enrollment.
