The Master of Arts in Teaching program offered by the department of Urban Education is designed to prepare graduates to become more proficient in teaching in the urban classroom. This program is unique in its emphasis on urban teaching. For further information, visit the Department of Urban Education page.
 
Application Deadlines:

Master of Arts in Teaching in Curriculum & Instruction Program (not seeking teacher certification):
February 1 - Summer Admission
April 15 - Fall Admission
September 30 - Spring Admission

Master of Arts in Teaching (seeking teacher certification):
September 1 - Spring Admission

You must also apply to the Alternative Certification Program (ACP) at UHD if you are seeking teacher certification. Please refer to the ACP website for information on the ACP admission requirements.

All graduate application materials must be submitted to the Office of Admissions by the application deadline of the semester for which you are applying. All ACP application materials (if applicable) must be submitted to the Department of Urban Education.

 
Scholarships:
MAT students are eligible for the Gordon Cain Scholarship. Scholarships will be awarded to those who are accepted in the MAT Program.

____ Baccalaureate Degree
    A baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution.
____ Application Fee
   

There is a non-refundable application fee of $35.00 (check or money order). Please indicate your name, UHD ID and date of birth on the check or money order. You may also pay by credit card. Information on the type of credit cards accepted and information needed are on the Texas Common Application.

     
____ Official Transcripts
    You must have official transcripts sent to the Office of Admissions-Graduate Admissions which reflect at least the last sixty semester hours of course work and evidence of a degree awarded. A transcript is considered official when it bears the institution’s seal, is signed by the issuing authority, and is sent directly by the institution or delivered in a sealed envelope from the institution, or is sent electronically to UHD from the issuing institution. Official transcripts must be less than a year old.

Former UHD students may request UHD transcripts free of charge. Visit the Registrar’s Office website for more information.

If you attended a college or university outside the United States, your transcripts must be evaluated by an evaluation service recognized by UHD. Visit the list of suggested evaluation services page.
     
____ Test Scores
   

GRE:
You are required to take the Graduate Records Examination (GRE) General which includes the Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical Writing sections before being fully admitted to the Master of Arts in Teaching Program. The previous Writing Assessment can be considered in lieu of the Analytical Writing. You should have your official scores sent to the Office of Admissions. Scores are valid only for tests taken within the last five years.

To have your GRE scores reported to UHD, use the graduate institution code R6922. You may register for the GRE on-line at www.ets.org/gre or by calling 1-800-GRE-CALL (1-800-473-2255).

TExES:
You must pass the Content area of the TExES exam if you are seeking teacher certification. To obtain a bar code for the TExES Content exam, please call 713-221-8906. Submit your TExES score to the Department of Urban Education.

     
____ Personal Statement
    Submit a personal statement describing how you believe your educational and professional background will contribute to your success in this program. It should contain no more than 500 words.
     
____ Letters of Reference
    Submit original letters from three individuals acquainted with your work and academic potential, for example, work supervisors and professors.
     
____ Teaching Contract
    Submit a copy of your teaching contract only if you are applying to the Master of Arts in Teaching in Curriculum and Instruction program. If you are seeking teacher certification, a teaching contract is not required.
