HAZLEWOOD APPLICATION
PROCEDURES
The Hazlewood Act provides exemption from tuition and some fees at
public colleges and universities in Texas for qualified Texas Veterans
and children of certain deceased veterans.
UHD Continuing Education courses are not covered by the Hazlewood
Exemption.
June 20, 1995 changes to Hazlewood
- Students in default on federal education loans or loans
made or guaranteed by the state of Texas are no longer eligible to
receive Hazlewood benefits.
- The amount of Pell Grant, SEOG and SSIG grants received by the
student, if any, must be taken into account when determining student
eligibility for a Hazlewood exemption.
- An eligible student may receive benefits under the Hazlewood Act
for a maximum of 150 credit hours attempted, including remedial
classes but excluding community education classes, the count
beginning the fall semester 1995.
Applications for Hazlewood benefits must be renewed each year.
To be eligible the veteran must:
- have served at least 180 days active service, excluding
training,
- have been a bona fide resident of Texas at the time he/she
entered the service.
- have been "honorably" discharged, or "discharged
under honorable conditions,"
- have resided in Texas 12 months continuously prior to
registration in college,
- have exhausted, or not be eligible for any Veteran’s
educational benefits,
- be ineligible or have limited eligibility for Federal education
grants (i.e., Pell Grant)
To receive consideration, the applicant must provide the following
prior to registration:
- a completed UHD Hazlewood Application.
New Hazelwood Exemption Applicant: Select this application if you have never used the Hazelwood exemption.
Previous Hazelwood Exemption Recipient: Select this application if you have previously used the Hazelwood exemption.

a copy of final DD-214 showing total time served, place of entry
into the service, "honorable discharge, or "discharged
under honorable conditions",

a letter from VA (1-800-827-1000) which shows eligibility status
for VA educational benefits,
- verification of hours paid for by the Hazlewood Act at other
colleges or universities.
Eligibility will be determined only after all of the required
documents have been received by Office of Scholarships and Financial
Aid.
DEADLINE: All documentation must be received and
reviewed by the Official Day of Record to be eligible for the
current semester. Hazlewood benefits are not retroactive to prior
terms.
