Faculty Viewpoint
Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic
support program that utilizes peer assisted study sessions. SI targets
historically challenging academic courses and offers to all enrolled students
regularly scheduled, out-of-class review sessions. Study sessions are
informal seminars in which students compare notes, discuss readings, develop
organizational skills, and predict test items.
The SI sessions are directed by SI leaders, usually students
who have previously taken the course and passed with at least a grade
of "B" and who audit the class during the semester for which they are
leading the SI session. Many of our SI leaders are recommended by faculty
members who have a firsthand experience of their academic success. For
this reason, we do rely heavily on your suggestions and nominations for
future SI leaders.
1. Does the SI leader have to have taken my class previously?
No, not necessarily your class, but the student does have to taken the
course and have made at least a grade of "B" or better.
2. Does the SI leader have to attend my class?
Yes. The SI leader must audit all your class sessions.
3. Do I need to add the SI leader to my class role?
No.
4. Who recruits the SI leaders?
You play an important part in recruiting SI leaders as well as supporting
current SI leaders and program coordinators. We value your recommendation
of students whom you believe would make strong peer leaders. If you have
names and phone numbers (or social security numbers) of students whom
you can confidently recommend, please do share those names with us. If
you feel you have a student whom you would like as an SI leader for one
or more of your classes next semester, also please let us know, and we
will be happy to accommodate you.
5. Who monitors the SI leaders?
One of the program coordinators, Dr. Gillian Hanson, will make impromptu
visits (at least three per semester) to the SI sessions and document the
SI leader's performance. At the end of the semester, these performance
reviews will be turned over to the SI leaders who may wish to use them
as part of their resume or developing curriculum vitae. We will also gladly
write letters of recommendation for any SI leader who would like one.
6. If I have other questions concerning supplemental instruction,
how may I get in touch with you?
You may call or e-mail Robin Davidson or Gillian Hanson.
