  • First-Year Seminar

The Learners' Community targets randomly selected first-time-in-college students, and Davis High School graduates entering UHD as El Paso Scholars. These first-semester college students enroll in a section of the College Success Program (CSP) 1101 course taught out of University College, the home college of all undeclared majors at UHD. CSP 1101, in use for close to 10 years, has in the past targeted students on academic probation and suspension. Since Fall1998, University College has actively recruited first-year students into CSP 1101 and tailored the curriculum to introduce freshmen to the protocols and rituals of university life, in the hope of enhancing their persistence and academic success.

There is university-wide interest in revamping the CSP 1101 course so it is more in line with the three-semester-credit-hour "Learning Frameworks" courses funded by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. This new first-year seminar will use the course designation CSP 1301. One model of the CSP 1301 has been developed by University College, and has been piloted since the fall of 2000. During the 2001-2002 academic year a team of Learners' Community faculty from eight academic disciplines, representing the range of core curriculum courses in which first-year students may enroll, worked collaboratively on the development of a second model for a CSP 1301 (Learning Frameworks) course. Two sections of this course were taught in Fall 2002 and funded through a grant from the U.S. Department of Education Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE). Both the faculty-developed model and the 2000 model will be reviewed during the 2003-2004 academic year by members of a university-wide task force to determine how best to develop a seminar that will acculturate first-year students into college life and incorporate critical reading and thinking skills to prepare students for rigorous coursework. While the CSP course is being revised, all Learners' Community students will enroll in CSP 1101.
