    General

    1. Will I be trained on how to use the laptop?

    Yes, you will be trained in your College Success Program (CSP) 110L course.

    2. What will I get with my laptop?

    You will receive the laptop with a carrying case, an external mouse, a power cord, and software that is already installed.

    3. What software comes installed on my laptop?

    4. Do I get to keep the laptop?

    The laptop belongs to the University, and will be checked out to you for use in this program.

    5. What happens if my laptop is damaged or stolen?

    If your laptop is damaged you should report it immediately to your CSP 110L instructor, and to Yesenia Montoya, property custodian for the Learners' Community (713-221-5338). If your laptop is stolen you should report the incident immediately (within 24 hours) to your CSP instructor as well as to the UH-Downtown Police at 713-221-8065, and to Ms. Montoya (713-222-5338).

    6. Do I have to purchase my own insurance for the laptop?

    All the laptops are insured through UH-Downtown. You will be required to pay a deductible for the repair or replacement of your laptop.

    7. Is there a secure place to store my laptop on campus when I don't need it for class?

    Yes, contact your CSP 110L instructor for details.

    8. How will my laptop access the wireless network?

    You will be issued a network account through your CSP 110L course. This account will be used to log into and connect to the wireless network.

    9. What is a network account?

    A network account is what identifies you and allows you to log onto the wireless network. This account includes a username and password that is used for security purposes. DO NOT share your username and password with anyone.

    10. What do I do if I cannot remember my password?

    Contact you CSP 110L instructor. They will get you a new password from the Network Administrator.

    11. Will I learn how to care for my laptop?

    Yes, in your CSP 110L course you will be shown everything you need to know to properly care for and maintain your laptop.

    12. What services can I access on my laptop?

    While you are logged onto the wireless zone, you can access the Internet, log into UNIX and print.

    13. What are the wireless network areas in the University?

    In your CSP 110L class you will be given a map of all the wireless areas on campus. There will also be signs posted indicating the wireless network areas. You may also access these maps on the Learners Comunity website.

    14. Will I be required to bring my laptop to class?

    It is up to the individual instructors. You will be required to bring your laptop to your CSP class for verification.

    15. Do I keep my laptop between semesters?

    No, your laptop will be checked in to the Learners' Community between semesters and then checked back out to you for the next semester.

    1. What kind of laptop do I get?

    Your CSP instructor will give you information on your laptop.

    2. Does my laptop have a battery?

    Yes. Be sure to charge your battery often by plugging in the laptop's power cord.

    3. How long does the battery last before it needs to be recharged?

    The battery is good for approximately two hours of active use. Please make sure your battery is charged before each class. Whenever possible plug in your laptop to keep it charged.

    4. Where can I print from my laptop?

    If you are on campus in a wireless zone, you can print. There will be printers in your CSP classrooms, one in the Academic Computing Lab and one on the 4th floor study area.

    5. Can I print at home?

    Yes, If you have a printer, you can install the printer driver and then hook your laptop up to your printer.

    6. Can I bring my own laptop from home and hook it up to the wireless network?

    No, you will not be able to access the wireless network with your personal laptop.

    Software

    1. Can I install my own software on the laptop?

    No, due to licensing laws you are not permitted to install personal software on University property. We are not responsible for data lost due to unauthorized software problems (Unless specifically authorized by your CSP instructor.)

    2. Can I custom configure my laptop?

    No, your laptop will be set up to meet the needs of your courses and for optimum performance within the wireless network.

    3. Am I responsible for software upgrades?

    No, the UH-Downtown Information Technology Department will upgrade all software as needed.

    4. How do I protect my laptop from viruses?

    McAfee Virus Scan is installed on your laptop and is set to update every day during class time. This update will take place while you are using your laptop in your class. You will have to be logged into the wireless network to get updated. You will not have to do anything else because this process is fully automatic.

    5. Will I be trained to use the software installed on my laptop?

    Yes, you will be trained in your CSP 110L class, along with your other linked courses, to use and implement the software installed on your laptop.

    6. Do I have email on my laptop?

    UHD will issue you a special email account for class related purposes. If you have an Internet email account already established from another provider (hotmail, yahoo, etc.) you will be able to access that on your laptop.

    Data Management

    1. What is backing up files?

    To back up your files means that you make copies of all your work that is located on your laptop.

    2. Why do I need to back up my files?

    It is VERY important to make copies of all your files, in case something happens to your laptop. Be sure to store your backups on floppy disks, and not on your laptop.

    3. When do I back up my files?

    You should back up your files often. If your laptop needs repairing, be certain that you have backed up all your files before turning it in.

    4. Will you teach me how to back up my files?

    Yes, you will be taught ways to back up your work in your CSP 110L class.

    Technical Support

    1. Who do I tell if I am having problems with my laptop?

    You can get assistance through your CSP instructor. They can either help you fix the problem or get you the assistance you need to get the problem fixed. If the problem is severe you should notify the program coordinator, Yesenia Montoya, who is in room S-405I. Her telephone number is 713-222-5339.
