Probation Recovery Program
Ideally, "early warning" counseling
interventions will identify students at risk of failing a course
early in the semester and support them in seeking assistance or
withdrawing from the course if no other alternative is possible.
This will decrease the number of first-year students placed on probation
or suspension in the first three semesters of university study.
When a student drops below a 2.0 GPA and is placed on probation,
counselors and the student will work to develop a recovery strategy.
The probation recovery program targets Learners' Community students with GPAs below 2.0 by the end of their first semester. Counselors help identify those Learners' Community students whose GPAs have fallen below 2.0 each semester, and contact them for counseling. Academic counselors work with small groups of freshmen to devise a structured recovery plan involving reduced outside workloads, future course sequencing and improved use of academic support resources. In particuar, counselors monitor the academic progress of El Paso and Tenneco scholars enrolled in the Learners' Community (El Paso Scholars must maintain a 2.0 GPA and complete 24 semester credit hours each academic year. Tenneco scholars must maintain a 2.0 and complete 18 semester credit hours.). Those scholars who fall short of the eligibility criteria may apply for a one-semester recovery scholarship funded through the Learners' Community. Counselors then work with El Paso Corporate Foundation and Bank of America to reinstate these students in their scholarship programs.
