Course Description

This course aims to provide students with an understanding of the principles and procedures used for effectively evaluating the cognitive, affective, and social learning of children and adolescents. In general, at the end of the course, the student should be able to: communicate the current trends and issues in assessment, use assessment results to guide instruction, design performance tasks along with a scoring rubric, and employ basic statistical analysis for evaluation purposes.

At the end of this course, the student will be able to:
1.    Define assessment related concepts
2.    Describe the purpose of different types of assessment
3.    Describe (and list) types of assessment
4.    Describe (and list) types of tests
5.    Explain psychometric characteristics of tests (i.e., reliability, validity)
6.    Describe techniques for establishing test reliability and validity
7.    Differentiate between "good" and "bad" learning objectives
8.    Evaluate different types of tests in comparison to each other (i.e., multiple-choice, open-ended, authentic)
9.    Select test items based on a taxonomy of instructional/learning objectives
10.  Construct tests aiming to measure student performance
11.  Evaluate tests (and test items) aiming to measure student performance
12.  Identify sources of bias in evaluation
13.  List the advantages and disadvantages of different types of tests and assessment techniques
14.  Describe legal and ethical issues related to assessment
15.  Utilize rudimentary statistical techniques in evaluating student performance

The system you will use to access this online course is Blackboard Vista. Students are expected to have computer access on a daily basis to successfully complete this course. Note: If you plan to access the course from work, try connecting early in the course. Some businesses have very rigid settings on their firewalls that do not allow participation in activities such as chat, or the interactivity necessary to take a quiz online.
Internet Service Provider - this course is done via connection through the internet. If you are going to work on your class from home, you must have DSL or cable modem line to guarantee solid high-speed access and optimal performance of the course program.
