Course Description
|
|
A study of concepts, skills,
and techniques to effectively analyze and develop computer information
systems in a team environment. Topics include systems thinking and systems
development based in an organizational context utilizing the Systems
Development Life Cycle methodology to provide a strong conceptual and
systematic framework. The various analytical and design skills and
techniques to develop software are presented within this framework. Project
management, computer-aided software tools, and other automated development
technologies are introduced.
Prerequisites of
course: Completion
of the common core plus 18 additional hours; Grade of C or better in CIS
2301.

Course Objectives
|
|
The overall
course objective is to give students the concepts and skills they need to
analyze and design information systems. More specifically, upon successful
completion of the course, students are expected to be able to:
- Describe and be knowledgeable about
the environment in which information systems are developed.
- Explain the essentials of
information systems project management.
- Analyze a business need and develop
an appropriate strategy and information systems design to solve the
business problem.
- Use various information-gathering
techniques for eliciting user requirements and system expectations.
- Construct and interpret a variety
of system description documents, including data flow diagrams,
decision tables, and other diagrams as well as screen, form, and
report layouts.
- Distinguish between alternative
designs for distributed systems, and explain issues about designing
Internet-based systems.
- Communicate effectively, in both
written and oral forms, systems specifications.
- Describe and be knowledgeable about
systems implementation and operation activities, such as coding,
testing, installation of systems, training and supporting end users,
and maintenance.

Downtown campus. The exam dates and times will be indicated in the
syllabus.

Technology

This course is delivered
through the Internet. The system you will use to access this online course
is Blackboard Vista. Students are expected to have access to a computer
connected to the Internet on a daily basis to successfully complete this
course.
If you are going to do your
course work from home, you must have a broadband connection to the
Internet, typically through a DSL or cable modem line to guarantee
high-speed access and optimal performance of the Blackboard Vista course
delivery system. If you plan to access the course from work, try connecting
early in the course to make sure that you can access the online course from
work. Some businesses have very rigid settings on their firewalls that do
not allow participation in activities such as chat, or the interactivity
necessary to take a quiz online.
