Mission Statement

The Student Transition and Retention (STAR) Program is a Title V grant funded program developed to support first-time in college (FTIC) students in the transition to college and along the path toward graduation.

The UHD STAR program accomplishes its mission by:
  • Collaborating with academic and student affairs departments to offer holistic programming
  • Creating opportunities for FTIC students to explore and utilize campus resources
  • Offering early opportunities for social interaction and campus engagement among FTIC students, peer mentors, faculty and staff

Program Initiatives

The STAR program includes four major components:
Summer Fast Track Institute An intense three-week academic development program for students seeking to achieve a “college ready” status on the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) Test.
Welcome Initiatives Programs and resources that ease the academic and social transition into college life.
College Acculturation and Personal Success (CAPS) Program Peer Networking and academic support services, including peer mentorship, tutoring and support for freshman seminars.
Learning and Study Strategies Inventory (LASSI) An assessment tool to determine study and learning skill levels and offer useful strategies for improvement.
