Learning what it means to be a college student and acquiring the skills to navigate successfully within the university's structure can be both intimidating as well as frustrating without the proper preparation and guidance . Orientation is a program designed to introduce new students into the University of Houston- Downtown community. It is designed to meet the needs of new students entering the university and to help make their transition to the university a smooth and enjoyable one. As an incoming freshman at UHD, you are expected to attend a Freshman Student Orientation session. There is an extensive body of research that shows that the students most likely to be successful are those who are engaged in their studies and form early connections with their university.
Most traditional one day UHD Freshman Orientation programs, however, provide only limited opportunities to experience first-hand the realities of college beyond placement testing, advising and registration for classes. Semester after semester, incoming freshmen have suggested that their initial orientation experience would have been more meaningful if it was expanded to include some exposure to university professors and the academic challenges they will face on their first day of classes. In response to their requests, UHD now offers you an alternative. The Freshman Summer Success Program (FSSP) is an expanded orientation program for incoming freshmen that fully engages students in the critical transition from high school to college by focusing specifically on academic expectations and challenges.
"I think that without the Summer Success Program, the transition from high school to college would’ve been very difficult."
The thematic focus of the 2008 Freshman Summer Success Program will engage students in a study of archeology, ancient civilizations, and specifically: "The Olympician Games ."
