Christopher John Francis Boone, a teenager highly skilled in mathematics, narrates this 2003 mystery novel by British writing Mark Haddon.  Admiring the powers of observation displayed by the fictional detective Sherlock Holmes, Christopher uses similar strategies in searching for the murderer of a neighbor’s dog, a journey that leads to solving a more personal mystery.

Considered an outsider who views the world in non-traditional ways, Christopher lacks an understanding of social conventions and human emotions. Ill at ease in unfamiliar places and in meeting new people, he relaxes by solving puzzles and mathematical problems. In some ways, he seems similar to Sheldon, the main character on “The Big Bang Theory,” an award-winning TV show.
