SustainbilityThe most recent attention on the depletion of the earth’s natural resources has generated global responses to the plight of our planet and the fate of future generations. “Going Green” is a catchphrase that suggests a paradigm shift, or cultural change, in the conservation of consumables and the recycling of waste products.

Likewise, “sustainability” seems to be the latest “buzz word” that attempts to raise an ecological consciousness, recognizing that the earth’s resources are finite.

So just what is “sustainability”? Though many definitions of this concept exist, Paul Hawken perhaps best summed up the term in The Ecology of Commerce:

“Leave the world better than you found it, take no more than you need, try not to harm life or the environment, make amends if you do.”

In addition to a healthy environment, it suggests that a society will only survive or be sustained long-term if it promotes economic growth and social justice.  The theme of the 2009 Freshman Summer Success Program will focus on this broader concept of “sustainability” and an awareness of how the global community must address economic development, ecological protection, and social justice as a “legacy” for future generations. Long-term sustainability is dependent on our ability to live responsibly and lead by example today to preserve the potential for a quality life for tomorrow.
