First-Generation Faculty Advice

My first year of college I definitely learned a lot from my classes, but I feel like I learned so much more from the other students.  There were students from different countries with completely different cultures, student who had been in the military and seen things that I couldn’t even imagine, and other students who had views of the world that were opposite of mine.  I loved learning about their perspectives.  They opened my eyes so that I could see the world differently or just understand how they viewed the world.  Now this just doesn’t happen all by itself.  You have to get involved on the campus.  I would urge you to join campus organizations that might be of interest to you—or at least go to a meeting or two—so that you can meet other students and learn things outside of the classroom.
