AtD Writing Study

Achieving the Dream

Four College text-books laying on top of one another.
The original focus of the Achieving the Dream initiative was to foster the academic success of community college students. Emphasizing a"culture of evidence," it now includes selective universities. The initiative now is particularly concerned about student groups that traditionally have faced significant barriers to success, including students of color and low-income students.

Main Initiatives

  1. Re-design the current College Success Program (CSP 1101)

A freshman orientation/academic seminar, CSP 1101 represents one early intervention strategy designed to introduce students to baccalaureate study and the expectations of the university.

  2. Establish a stats lab to provide tutorial help to students in upper division courses. As a four year university, UHD believed that it was important to identify obstacles to student success in more advanced courses as well as in entry-level courses. UHD offers 6 statistics courses, supporting majors in criminal justice, business, natural science, education, mathematics, and the social sciences.

  3. Provide funding to assist faculty in developing effective teaching strategies and to enhance the institution’s assessment capabilities. Institutions are to become “learning organizations” where administrators, faculty, and staff regularly engage in reflection and candid self-assessment and seek out new ways of improving student success. UHD’s major objective in establishing a special ATD faculty development fund is to help bring about this cultural transformation by actively encouraging faculty to experiment with different pedagogies and to assess their effectiveness.
