Academic Advising-Student & Advisor Responsibilities

The relationship between a student and their advisor is one of shared responsibility. It is your responsibility as a student to:

  • Take the initiative to seek advice in making academic decisions.
  • Keep your advisor informed about changes in your academic progress, course selection, and academic goals.
  • Be familiar with the General Education Core Requirements and the requirements of majors in which you have an interest; schedule courses each semester in accordance with the General Education Core Requirements.
  • Follow UHD procedures for registration, and observe academic deadlines.
  • Understand the information provided to you by UHD, including your unofficial degree review and grade reports; know what to do in case you believe any of the information is incorrect.
  • Come prepared to the advising session. Keep copies of your unofficial degree review, UHD Catalog, proposed schedules, and any other paperwork (transcripts) that you may receive from your advisor or UHD.
  • Understand UHD policy concerning academic eligibility, academic probation, and academic dismissal.
  • Keep UHD Enrollment Services informed of your current local address and telephone number.
  • Take the initiative to ask questions at anytime if the policies and procedures are unclear -- don't assume your advisor knows what it is you don't understand.
It is your advisor's responsibility to:
  • Clarify UHD policies, regulations, programs, and procedures about which you may have questions.
  • Provide relevant and current information about General Education Core Requirements, courses, majors, and degree requirements.
  • Help explore your interests, abilities, and goals, and relate them to potential majors.
  • Offer advice on selecting courses and assist you in developing an academic plan that satisfies degree requirements.
  • Discuss your academic performance and the implications of your performance for the undergraduate program you wish to pursue.
  • Be knowledgeable about campus resources and make appropriate referrals.
  • Explain and clarify rules and regulations of the Texas Success Initiative and how they apply to you.
