Academic Advising - First Time in College (FTIC)

A first time in college student is an individual who has never attended any accredited college or university.

  1. Complete and submit an application for admission to Office of Admissions.

  2. Attend an orientation session. Information about orientation will be given upon acceptance to the university.

  3. Take the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA) test or a state-approved alternative test before enrolling for college courses.

  4. Take the Placement Test if you have not taken the AccuPlacer/WritePlacer as your THEA alternative. THEA does not exempt you from taking the Placement Test; speak to your admissions counselor or academic advisor for any questions you may have.

The transition from high school to college can be difficult for some students. UH-Downtown offers many tools for students to achieve academic success.

  • The College Success Program is a college level course that introduces new students to college life. Topics include study skills, time management, university resources, library skills, and goal setting.

  • The UH-Downtown College Catalog outlines student services, policies and procedures, degree programs, course descriptions, etc.

  • The UH-Downtown Student Handbook outlines student services and policy statements concerning students' rights and responsibilities. As a UH-Downtown student, you are responsible for understanding your advising responsibilities and your advisor's responsibilities. The relationship between you and your advisor is a shared responsibility.

It's never too late to look at what the future will hold and UH-Downtown offers students many programs for academic and future success.
