Welcome to the Scholars Academy at the University of Houston-Downtown

The UHD Scholars Academy (SA) is an academically competitive program in the College of Science and Technology (CST) that promotes scholarship and student success for undergraduate students majoring in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).  A project of the faculty in the UHD College of Science and Technology, its mission is to increase the number of academically capable students graduating with degrees in the natural, mathematical and computer sciences, and engineering/engineering technology, and to increase the number of those choosing to pursue graduate study in these fields.  This competitive program is made possible by the National Science Foundation, U.S. Army Research Office, U.S. Department of Education, U.S. Office of Naval Research, Welch Foundation, and UHD Donors.

Scholars participate in special extracurricular activities and classes.  They enroll in small mathematics and science classes taught by selected full-time faculty (no graduate teaching assistants).  Classrooms and laboratories are equipped with latest teaching technologies and engineering/ scientific equipment. Scholars participate in academic seminars, fieldtrips to research sites, and research internships.

The Academy students are awarded scholarships ranging from $3,200 to $5,000 per academic year. Summer stipends are also given for research participation for specific scholarships.  At UH-Downtown, tuition and fees cost about $1,900 a semester for full-time residential students. Scholars may also apply for other types of financial assistance at UHD, such as the TExAS grant.

UHD is one of four freestanding, self-administered institutions in the University of Houston System, located in Houston, Texas, USA.  With roughly 11,500 students enrolled, UH-Downtown is a public four-year undergraduate university, beginning limited expansion into graduate programs.  UHD's dynamic campus is located in downtown Houston, the heart of Houston's central business district.

With dedicated faculty, small classes and innovative course options, UHD offers excellent educational opportunities in more than 30 bachelor's degree programs.  UHD prepares individuals to thrive in the multicultural workplace of the 21st century through interaction with its richly diverse student population.

At UHD, the emphasis is on teaching excellence and student success.

Please feel free to contact us with comments or questions.  We look forward to hearing from you.
