"Let every individual and institution now think and act as a responsible trustee of Earth, seeking
choices in ecology, economics and ethics that will provide a sustainable future, eliminate pollution,
poverty and violence, awaken the wonder of life and foster peaceful progress in the human adventure."
— John McConnell, founder of International Earth Day
Sustainability is the focus of the sections of introductory biology (BIOL 1312) that I teach at University of Houston-Downtown.
Each semester, students work in teams to explore topics in sustainability, and engage in related service learning to connect coursework to real world problems – and solutions – in our community.
Creative and inspiring communications about their research projects are produced by student teams to share with diverse audiences. Formats include: YouTube video, web animation, web page, architectural scale model, photography exhibit, magazine, brochure, coloring book and puzzle.
My goal is to provide a challenging, enjoyable, student-centered course that provides insight into pressing issues such as resource overuse, climate change, environmental health, and human population growth.
