Science Learning Center - First Time to the SLC?

Here’s what you need to know to make the most of your visit:

  • You really do need to have your UHD ID card to use the SLC. Don’t leave home without it! And don’t forget to get it back before you leave.
  • Sign in with the attendants, and let them know it’s your first time and you’d like an orientation. They can show you how to use the computers, which port to put headphones into, how to find a program that can help you, and can show you materials in the specimen study area.
  • Students who come to the SLC are all ages, all classifications, all majors and all ranges of ability. It’s every UHD student’s SLC. Don’t be shy about asking for help.
  • Because of this variety of needs, attendants will be most helpful if you can tell them which CLASS you are studying for, and more importantly which TOPIC. If you say, "oh, we’re doing something about chemistry," that won’t help since we have software and videos for all levels. You need to say "bonding" or "balancing equations."
  • Sometimes it will take some time on your part to go through different CD’s to find what will help you most. Although they know a lot, the attendants can’t possibly know all the topics on all our software.
  • If you found a video or software that was very helpful for a topic, let the attendant know or write a note on the whiteboard for your fellow students to use as a lead.
  • Be specific about the level of the topic you need. For example, if you are a non-science major studying "biochemistry," if you merely ask for software about "biochemistry" it will probably be over your head. Instead, you need to ask for help on introductory biology on the topic of biochemistry. That will be much better suited to your needs.
  • If you have a suggestion or complaint for the Director, please make sure you leave a way for her to contact you (phone number or email). If you don’t, she can’t pinpoint exactly what you’re asking for, and you’ll feel like no one paid attention to your request.
  • Many students use our computers every week, and sometimes do things that change the hard drives and affect how the computers work. If something is not working as you expect it, PLEASE call it to the attention of the attendant. We also are constantly improving our media holdings to suit your needs, so some shortcuts, software, settings and startup items may not look the same each time you come in.
