The Department of Natural Sciences at the University of Houston-Downtown provides Bachelor of Science degrees in Biology, Biological & Physical Sciences, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, and Microbiology. The Department is also engaged in research in science education, and the education and training of science teachers (K-12) in conjunction with the Department of Urban Education at UHD. Students are educated using state-of-the-art equipment and have opportunities to participate in independent research in laboratories at UHD and neighboring research institutions beginning at the end of their freshman year. These research experiences make UHD graduates in the natural science highly competitive for graduate and professional programs in the sciences. Areas of research specialization the Department include Environmental Sciences, Geosciences, Polymer Chemistry, Molecular Genetics, Biochemistry, and Physiology. The Department faculty have active collaborations with regional Texas industries and research institutions as well as colleges in the Departments of Computer & Mathematical Sciences and Engineering Technology at UHD. The Department is also engaged in international exchange of students for research at several institutions in Poland.
The Department also supports key community activies such as the Houston Urban Network for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (HUNSTEM) and the Science and Engineering Fair of Houston (SEFH). |
