COMPUTER SCIENCE ACADEMY

A function of the Center for Computational Science and Advanced Distributed Simulation
at the University of Houston-Downtown

Application Information

Something exciting is happening at the University of Houston-Downtown. Through funding by the Department of Defense, U.S. Army Research Office and National Science Foundation, the Center for Computational Science and Advanced Distributed Simulation (CCSDS) has acquired state-of-the-art computer equipment. CCSDS has also created new computer classrooms and upgraded existing ones within the Department of Computer and Mathematical Sciences.

In conjunction with CCSDS, we will be offering the Computer Science Academy for high school junior and seniors. Classes will consist of instruction in programming with Java and review of Pre-Calculus through lectures and use of PLATO software. An introduction in graphics, programming in C++, and web page development with HTML. In addition to this, students will be exposed to exciting U.S. Army research projects.

Classes will be from 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at the University of Houston-Downtown in Room 611-South. (an upgraded computer classroom with Pentium 333Mhz machines). Classes will meet on the following Saturdays:

October 7, 21

November 4, 11 December 2, 9 January 13, 20, 27
February 3, 17, 24 March 3, 10 April 7, 14, 28

Because of the timeframe and subject matter of this program, attendance will be made mandatory. Excessive absences will result in dismissal from the academy.

I have enclosed an application form and information sheet. If you are interested in applying and willing to commit to attending each Saturday listed above, complete the application packet (as described in the announcement) and submit it to the address indicated. Please return your application packet as soon as possible, but no later than September 15, 2000.

Also, I would like to ask one additional thing of you. If you are planning to apply, please give us a call at 221-8686 so that we will be expecting your application. If we are out, leave your name and a message on our voice mail.

We at UH-Downtown look forward to hearing from you and hope that you will apply to take part in this new educational opportunity. If you need directions or further information, please give us a call at 713.221.8686
