Program Description     Application Information

The Center for Computational Sciences (C2SDS) at the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) will offer Saturday Academy Program beginning September 17, 2005 for 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th graders. The objective is to prepare students for college in the areas of Computational Science and Mathematics.  Classes will be held on Saturdays, 9:00 a.m.- 11:30 p.m. at UHD.  The benefits that selected students will receive include:

  • Sharpen mathematical communication (written and oral) skills;
  • Strengthen problem formulation and problem solving skills;
  • Develop better reasoning skills and a higher level of abstraction;
  • Prove that mathematics is a creative form of art and great fun.

Students will attend sessions at the University of Houston-Downtown on each of the following Saturdays from 9:00 - 11:30 a.m.:

September 17

December 3, 17

March 4

A separate lesson will be designed for each of the 16 sessions.   Lessons will typically discuss a group of concepts and problems from the different areas of mathematics and computational sciences.   Worksheets will contain questions inviting students to investigate, rather than providing them with the answers right away.

No tuition or fees will be charged for participation in the Saturday Academy .   However, each student is expected to provide his/her own transportation to UH-Downtown.

All program functions will be held in classrooms at the University of Houston-Downtown, and instructors will be UH-D faculty members.   Students will be expected to abide by the rules set by the University of Houston-Downtown and the Program Director.
