Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What is the MAT?  The MAT is the Master of Arts in Teaching degree offered at the University of Houston Downtown.  It is a graduate degree designed to support existing teachers.

  2. Where can I get more information about the MAT?  You can get information about the MAT from several pages on UHD’’s website:

  3. Where can I get an application to the MAT program?  The application is available online at http://www.uhd.edu/admissions/application.htm. For more information you could contact the Office of Enrollment Services--Graduate Admissions, One Main Street, Houston, TX 77002, Telephone: 713-221-8522 Fax: 713-221-8157.

  4. When is the application due?  The completed application is due on February 1st for summer admission, April 15th for fall admission, and September 30th for spring admission.

  5. How do I decide which courses to take and when to take them? There are suggested course sequences in the College of Public Service Advising Office. You should make an appointment with the Graduate Advisor and file a degree plan. The degree plan is a suggested sequence of courses. You must complete your degree within 6 years of admission.

  6. How many hours are there in the MAT program?  There are 39 hours in the program not including pre-admission requirements.

  7. Will I be able to get a Supervision or Mid-management certification with the MAT degree?  No, the MAT does not offer supervision courses or mid-management certification.

  8. Do I need to be an active teacher of record to participate in the MAT program?  Yes, you must be a current teacher of record and have a current teaching contract to participate in the MAT program.

  9. May I enter the MAT program if I am a dedicated substitute?  No, you must be a full time teacher of record (in charge of your own classroom) to enter the MAT program. 

  10. Is it possible to work on certification while I take graduate courses?  Yes, see Masters of Arts in Teaching with Certification information. You may apply to work on your certification in Bilingual (EC-4); Elementary (EC-4), Elementary (4-8), and Secondary Education while taking graduate (MAT) courses.

  11. May I enroll in the MAT program if I do not have an undergraduate degree?  You may not enroll in the MAT program if you do not have an undergraduate degree. You may apply if you plan to graduate prior to the MAT admission date.

  12. Will I have to take prerequisites before taking graduate courses?  No.

  13. How can I apply for the Cain scholarship?  You automatically apply for the Cain scholarship when you complete an application for the MAT program.

  14. Where can I find out what courses are required for each degree? A listing of the required courses can be found at on the Masters of Arts in Teaching - Curriculum & Instruction web page. See the UHD catalog for course descriptions.

  15. Will I be able to transfer graduate hours from another institution?  Yes, you may transfer 6 graduate hours from another institution if the courses have been taken within the last 5 years and are comparable to our MAT courses.

  16. How do I request to transfer hours?  You must write a letter to the Director of the MAT Program and request to have hours transferred.  In the letter you must include a copy of the catalog description of the courses that you wish to transfer and the MAT courses you wish to replace.

  17. Will I be required to write a thesis?  A thesis is not a requirement of the MAT program. You will be required to develop, test, produce, and present a project based on your extensive research (e.g. grant, paper, empirical study).
