SOAR Grant Award
The award-winning Be A Teacher Club earned a $1,000 Student Organizing and Assistance Resources (SOAR) grant from the National Education Association (NEA) in September.
"The SOAR award was made possible by the hard work and dedication that the students, faculty and staff put into the program. Their commitment to quality and relationship building is an essential part of the program," Bezette said, who is the Assistant Dean at UHD College of Public Service.
The grant award funded to both LSC-Kingwood and UHD will sponsor Different Seasons of Learning Professional Development Program from 12-3:30 p.m on December 3, 2011.The Professional Development Program will feature experts in their respective fields.
- At 12:30 p.m., Suzette Goss, professor of Math for the Teaching Profession at LSC-Kingwood, will present Secondary Math Instructional Strategies.
- At 1:30 p.m., Sanitation Station: Health and Hygiene in Schools will be presented by Daphne Richardson, RN, a school nurse at Piney Woods Elementary School in the Splendora Independent School District; English/Language Arts: Phonics and English/Language Arts: Writing will be presented by Pam Byrne, professor of READ at UHD, co-sponsor for UHD’s Be A Teacher Club and the secondary ELA director for Aldine ISD.
- At 2:30 p.m., Jamie Spates, Assistant Principal MacArthur High School, Aldine ISD, will present Differentiated Instruction Curriculum.
"Professional development will be an ongoing part of the students' careers as educators and participation in this program will build their résumés," Jackson said, who is the Assistant Professor at Lone Star College-Kingwood. "This session benefits students who are currently in or who are interested in the AAT or Joint Admissions Program with LSC-Kingwood and UHD by providing access to education experts who present a variety of topics applicable to the students' future classrooms."
