Undergraduate Education
The Department of Criminal Justice offers a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree with a major in Criminal Justice. The course work associated with the degree prepares the student not only with a basic understanding of the criminal justice system, but also with strong communication and analytical skills. The development of these skills is accomplished through a number of academic endeavors, including:
1) a comprehensive and extensive general education
2) a critical and in-depth analysis of the causes of crime from an interdisciplinary approach
3) the study of the measurement of crime
4) the study of society's formal and informal efforts at preventing and controlling crime
5) presentation of the criminal justice system as an applied science where students are taught to integrate theory, empirical validation, and practical application

Careers in Criminal Justice
Graduates of the program can pursue a number of career paths including positions as law enforcement officers, institutional corrections officers, and community corrections officers at the local, state, or federal level. The department's curriculum also prepares graduates to enter corporate security as investigators of internal theft and fraud. A degree in criminal justice is a marketable degree in a number of fields and courses of graduate study, including law school.
