Introduction
The Department of Criminal Justice is the only program in the greater Houston area that offers an organized educational program leading to a degree in criminal justice. In fact, the criminal justice program was the first to offer a bachelors degree at the downtown campus. In 2005 the University of Houston – Downtown celebrated the 30th Anniversary of serving the educational needs of the culturally diverse Houston metropolitan area and the department has again been a leader in forging new ground within the University by offering the first graduate education program leading to a Master of Science degree in Criminal Justice and a Master of Security Management. The department continues to refine and expand its programming to meet the ever-changing needs of the community.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Department is to maintain high quality academic programs to meet the needs of students. In furtherance of this mission, the faculty recognize the connection between excellence in education, research, scholarship and service with applied, theoretical and policy relevance. This includes demonstrated competency in criminological, methodological, and administrative theory as well as analytical and technical skills. Thus the Department strives to provide students with knowledge of mechanisms and processes of criminal justice systems, sufficient to prepare students for professional and managerial careers in criminal justice, as well as research and advanced study.
Educational Philosophy
The educational philosophy of the Department is to integrate intellectual growth and skill development in the preparation of students. The Criminal Justice programs combine applied aspects of the field with the theoretical components necessary for the development of effective public policy for community safety and justice. The programs provide students unique learning experiences that transcend basic course work, including opportunities to conduct independent research and participate in agency internships. .
The Department has developed a number of programs which allow our students unique learning experiences and that transcend basic course work, including providing opportunities to conduct independent research and internships. Further, we provide mentoring and networking opportunities with criminal justice professionals that enable our students to better understand the practical aspects of administering justice. Maintaining a positive working relationship with criminal justice professionals and representatives of the community at large facilitates achievements of our goals.
