Organization Description

CIS is a non-profit dropout prevention organization that provides and helps coordinate student assistance services at the school campus in order to best meet the physical and emotional needs of at-risk students and to empower these students to remain in school. CIS has over 90 offices located in Houston, Alief, Spring Branch, Aldine and Ft. Bend ISD.


Description of Internship

Hours: Monday - Friday, 8 am to 4:00 pm (a few of our sites are open until 5:30 or 6). Students would work on one of our school campus sites where CIS has an office.

CIS project managers are flexible and try to work around the intern’s schedule. Two internships are available:

(A) Students would work on a school campus under the supervision of a project manager in the CIS office. The project manager on site would supervise the intern. Depending on their experience and academic level they may assist/or shadow in the following activities: assess the needs of at-risk students, conduct home visits with a caseworker, advocacy training, crisis intervention workshops/training, connect the student and family with social service agencies, participate in follow-up meetings with family/staff/student, participate in individual or group supportive guidance, mentor and tutor students in need of academic support.

B) CIS also has a clerical internship in the CIS central office located on W. 18th Street near TC Jester. The intern would be in an office environment and would be exposed to the many different departments found in a non-profit organization.


Criteria for Interns

Open to all social science majors. Well groomed professional appearance; Good communication skills: written and oral; Good computer skills - Word, Excel, etc.; Excellent work attitude - punctual and must know the importance of commitment; Excellent interpersonal skills; Ability to work with a diverse population; Ability to maintain strict confidentiality guidelines. Students are required to pass a criminal history background check as mandated by all school districts.

Additional Information

There will be an interview with Ms. Sherman at the CIS main office located at 2150 West 18 th St. in Houston. A school site will be identified for the internship. The intern will interview with the project manager at the school where he/she will be placed.
