BPSOS is a national Vietnamese American community-based organization with branch
offices across the US. Our mission is “empowering, organizing, and equipping
Vietnamese individuals and communities in their pursuit of liberty and dignity.”
Description of Internship
Title: Domestic Abuse
Assistant
Hours: 9-5 a couple of times per week during business hours
Location:
BPSOS office
Duties (Responsibilities):
- Filing forms
- Helping with basic computer programs
- Contacting clients and making appointments
Requirements (Qualifications):
Volunteer should be mature, trustworthy,
and dedicated towards serving the Vietnamese community. Bilingual fluency
in English and Vietnamese is helpful, but not required.
Description of Internship:
Title: Outreach Volunteer
Hours: Variable; Negotiable
Location: Variable
Duties (Responsibilities):
- Visiting targeted organizations, businesses, temples, churches, special events, and other locations where people congregate to distribute brochures/posters and inform people about a certain service including: torture survivors, human trafficking, disaster relief, immigration services, health awareness, and senior services
- Conducting outreach workshops to educate the Vietnamese community about relevant issues
- Conducting outreach workshops to social service agencies about Vietnamese cultural competency
Requirements (Qualifications):
Volunteer should be mature, trustworthy, and dedicated towards serving the Vietnamese community. Bilingual fluency in English and Vietnamese is helpful, but not required. Fluency in Spanish may be helpful.
Description of Internship
Title: Volunteer ESL Teacher
This is a wonderful opportunity for anyone looking to work with extraordinary students who are eager to learn.
Hours: Classes are held every Tuesdays and Thursdays evening from 6:00-8:00PM.
Location: BPSOS office
Duties (Responsibilities):
- Prepare lesson plans and class activities.
- We have a specialized curriculum and syllabus to guide you through your class, but we encourage teachers to use creative teaching techniques with the students.
- Attend Quarterly Teacher’s meetings.
Requirements (Qualifications):
- Volunteer should be mature, trustworthy, and dedicated towards serving the Vietnamese community.
- Interested volunteer must be reliable, able to work independently, and able to commit for at least a semester (four months).
Description of Internship
Title: Volunteer ESOL & Citizenship Teacher
Hours: Classes are held every Tuesdays and Thursdays evening from 6:00-8:00PM. Or Thursdays and Fridays from 10 am – 12 pm.
Location: BPSOS office or Park Place Elementary
We need volunteers to teach twice-weekly evening classes in basic English for speakers of other languages (ESOL), ESOL for citizenship, and/or civics. Classes should be fun, interactive – and most importantly, effective. Instructional methods will include lectures, worksheets, games, oral and written quizzes, and role plays.
Positions for mock interviewers (volunteers who help immigrants practice for
their citizenship interviews) are available as well, requiring attendance during
class times but no prep time (two to four hours per week).
Positions for one-on-one volunteer tutors or English conversation partners may
also be available on a case-by-case basis.
Requirements:
- Commitment and reliability – Instructors must be available two evenings per week, for two hours at a time. Mock interviewers and individual tutors may contribute two to four hours per week. All volunteers must be able to commit to at least four months, preferably longer.
- Cultural sensitivity – You should be able to demonstrate sensitivity to individuals from diverse cultures, either through coursework (in anthropology, sociology, international studies, or similar fields) or direct experience.
- Education – Each instructor or tutor must be currently enrolled in college or have completed a bachelor’s degree.
- Languages – Bilingual fluency in English and Vietnamese/Spanish
Description of Internship
Title: Special Events & Fundraising Volunteer
Opportunity:
Seeking highly-driven, self motivated intern to help with marketing, event planning
and fundraising initiatives.
Duties: In this position you will assist BPSOS with the overall growth and strategic direction of our organization and other organizations affiliated with BPSOS, as well as assist with the day-to-day administration, operations, and logistics. Specific duties include:
- Researching potential speakers and appropriate funding options via grants and sponsorships;
- Post-event tracking (attendance, follow-ups, profits, stats);
- Preparing materials for volunteer, fundraising, professional development, or other BPSOS related events;
- Updating online media database;
- Making phone calls and writing letters/emails relating to events, fundraising and programs with employees, donors, potential sponsors, and other program partners;
- Assisting with event production;
- Managing prospect, sponsorship, and business information and materials in the BPSOS database and by other means; and
- Any other special projects or tasks, as needed.
Expectations:
The ideal candidate will have great attention to detail and have a flexible attitude, warm personality and willingness to learn and thrive in a dynamic environment.

Description of Internship
Title: Vietnamese Translator
Hours: flexible
Location: BPSOS Houston
Duties (Responsibilities):
- Translating documents and files from English to Vietnamese and vise versa.
Requirements (Qualifications): Volunteer should be mature, trustworthy, and dedicated towards serving the Vietnamese community. Bilingual fluency in English and Vietnamese is a must! The individual however does not need to come during office hours and can work from anywhere translating documents including home.
Description of Internship
Title: Health Awareness and Promotion Program (HAPP) Volunteer
Hours: Variable/negotiable
Location: Variable
Duties (Responsibilities):
- Assist with women’s health awareness workshops on breast and cervical cancers: pass out materials, help plan workshops and presentations, conduct surveys, translate materials into Spanish or Vietnamese; experienced volunteers can eventually plan and conduct their own workshops
- Help to create women’s support groups by surveying needs and recruiting members
- Facilitate a women’s support group
Requirements (Qualifications): Volunteer should be mature, trustworthy, and dedicated towards serving the Vietnamese community. Bilingual fluency in English and Vietnamese is helpful, but not required. Personal car or transportation is not required but is helpful.
Description of Internship
Title: Volunteer Computer Tutor
Hours: Usually weekdays M-F 9AM-5:30PM; possible weekends or evenings as desired
Location: BPSOS office
Duties (Responsibilities):
- Teaching/tutoring group of Vietnamese seniors basic computer skills including using the internet, accessing email, and using basic Microsoft Office programs
Requirements (Qualifications):
Volunteer should be mature, trustworthy, and
dedicated towards serving the Vietnamese community. Bilingual fluency in English
and Vietnamese is required. Volunteer must be very patient and respectful of
some of the cognitive difficulties that former torture survivors may have.
Description of Internship
Title: Webmaster Volunteer
Hours: Flexible
Location: BPSOS office/Flexible
Duties (Responsibilities):
- The volunteer needs to design/update a home page and websites.
- The volunteer should check that the website has no bugs, so a customer does not get an error if he is trying to do a transaction.
- The volunteer controls the security of the website, so that hackers cannot access confidential data.
- The volunteer should then select a reliable host for that domain. The volunteer should work as a marketer to create banner advertisements and display them on other websites. The volunteer should be able to write website content.
Requirements (Qualifications):
- The webmaster volunteer should have good command over HTML (Hypertext Markup Language), CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) and Extensible Markup Language (XML). Knowledge of the open-source Unix operating system or its variants
- It is helpful, if the webmaster knows a programming language such as C++ or Java.
- Volunteer should be mature, trustworthy, and dedicated towards serving the Vietnamese community. Bilingual fluency in English and Vietnamese is helpful, but not required.
Criteria for Interns
- Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age.
- We accept all College majors
- Volunteers must be mature, responsible and trustworthy
- Respect for and willingness to live among people of different faiths, cultures, and traditions different from their own.
