Organization Description
LAH teaches Houston adults to read, write, and communicate in English so they can achieve their full potential as parents, workers, citizens and community members. This is accomplished by offering English as a Second Language classes, Adult Basic Education classes, Computer Literacy classes, and Family Literacy classes at our primary office and at sites throughout Houston.
Description of Internship
Work to strengthen volunteer connections with local universities, colleges, and high schools.
Actively recruit new volunteers by attending fairs and speakers’ bureaus. Assist with media communications to recruit volunteers. Establish and enhance communications with local school administrators. Assist with programs for potential volunteers, such as “While You’re Waiting” and “Strictly Speaking”. Create new methods and materials for recruiting volunteers. Assist with additional programs as needed.
Criteria for Interns
Strong communication and public speaking skills. Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher. Able to work independently as well as in a team environment. Bilingual English/Spanish preferred. Over age 21 preferred. Open to all social science majors.
