NAVIGATING: DEPARTMENT

Adjunct Office: Office space has been provided for you in S-1099. In addition to being a workspace for you, you may use this room for student conferences.  Because of the large number of faculty who use the office, facilities must be shared.  Desks cannot be claimed by any one individual exclusively.  For information about the computers in this room, see Electronic Facilities. There also is a telephone in the room through which you can make outgoing calls only.

Copies: See Photocopying in Teaching: Department.

English Degree Programs: The English Department currently offers two undergraduate degrees, a B.A. in English and a B.S. in Professional Writing, and a M.S. in Professional Writing.

Faxes: The English department fax machine is located in the department workroom inside 1045-South. Easy-to-follow instructions are posted just above the machine. If you receive a fax, it will be placed in your mailbox. Please remind people to address the fax specifically to you, so that it can be identified easily. The fax # is 713-226-5205, and the machine is left on 24 hours a day, but faculty have access to it only during office hours, generally 8am-5pm.

Faculty Copy Room and Lounge (S-1048): This room contains a Scranton grading machine, copier, mailboxes, worktables, and a small kitchen.  All equipment is available for your use. No students are allowed in this room. For conferences with students, please use one of the Adjunct's Office (S-1092, 1094, 1098). Your copier code is the last 4 digits of your social security number. .

Keys: You will need keys to the adjunct offices, S-1048 (the faculty copy room and lounge), and S-1032 (the printer room), as these rooms are always kept locked. Ask about keys in the department office. If you are no longer working at UHD, you must return your keys to the department office.

Kitchen: All faculty and staff are welcome to use the refrigerator, microwave, toaster, and sink in the faculty lounge (S-1048). The Department provides the coffee. Please help to keep the area clean by taking home leftovers and cleaning up after you have used the area. Although not frequent, there have been mysterious food disappearances.

Lounge: See Faculty Copy Room and Lounge .

Mailboxes: You will have a mailbox in S-1048. Please check it, and the bulletin board in that room, regularly. Students are not allowed to enter this room. Please do not instruct students to place assignments or messages in your mailbox. These items should be given to office personnel in 1045-S. Department staff will put papers in your mailbox, or forward messages to you by email.

Office Space: Office space has been provided for adjunct faculty in S-1092, 1094, and 1098. In addition to being a workspace for you, you may use this room for student conferences. Because of the large number of faculty who use the offices, facilities must be shared. Desks cannot be claimed by any one individual exclusively. For information about the computers in this room, see Electronic Facilities . There is a telephone in the faculty lounge through which you can make outgoing calls only.

Pay period: Paychecks are issued at the end of the month. You may pick up your paycheck at the Department Office, or you may make arrangements for your paycheck to be deposited directly to your bank.  Please date and sign your time sheets and place them in Ruby Brown's mailbox or in box in 1045-S.

Paychecks: For the 9-month academic year, the paychecks arrive at the END of the month; thus, the first paycheck arrives on October 1 (not September 1), and the last one arrives on June 1. If you have not signed up for direct deposit (which you can do in 910-South), you must PICK UP your paycheck from the English Department. (And even if you have direct deposit, you may have to pick up your first paycheck in Employment Services & Operations.) Your check-stub will be put in your mailbox.

Summer payment is made in one check. Summer I is paid on July 1. Summer II is paid on August 1.

Pay rates: The current one-course pay rate for adjuncts with a master's degree is $2400, and the rate for adjuncts with doctorates is $2550.
